Strickland Scores Five Times as Gannon Completes Play in Bruno Classic

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Gannon women's water polo team dropped both of its matches on Saturday while concluding play in the Bruno Classic. Saturday's games took place in the Blodgett Pool on the campus of Harvard University.
The Golden Knights faced two more Division I opponents, losing 20-5 to No. 17 Wagner followed by a 23-6 setback to Marist.
Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) led the way for the Gannon attack. The sophomore scored twice against Wagner and three times vs. Marist and already has nine goals on the young season.
Gannon returns to action in two weeks playing in the Robinette Invitational hosted by Mercyhurst at Cathedral Prep's Hallman Aquatics Center. The tournament is set for Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19.

Wagner improved to 8-2 as the Seahawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead after one quarter and led 13-1 at the half. Sydney McGarry (Erie, Pa./McDowell) got Gannon on the board early in the second q uarter on a power play goal, assisted by Ellie Velasco (Riverside, Calif./Arlington). It was McGarry's third goal of the season. Wagner ran off the next nine goals before the Golden Knights scored four straight goals to end the third quarter and begin the fourth. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) scored two of those goals giving the sophomore six on the young season.

Marist 23, Gannon 6
Gannon wrapped up play in the Bruno Classic with the loss to the Red Foxes. The Golden Knights held close in the early going as Jade Strickland's (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) second goal of the first quarter pulled the Knights to 6-3 with under 30 seconds to play. Marist scored a late goal to end the quarter with a 7-3 lead, and the Red Foxes went on to make it six straight goals with the first five scores of the second period. Sydney McGarry (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Selena Martinez (Fullerton, Calif./Buena Park) contributed goals to snap the string as Marist led 13-5 at the half. Gannon was unable to get its offense going in the second half, as Strickland's third goal of the match early in the third quarter was the lone score in the half. Marist owned a narrow 29-27 advantage in shots but the Red Foxes shot a sizzling 79.3 percent compared to 22.2 for Gannon.
