GAME OUTLOOK

Let's try this season opener thing again.

The Gannon University women's lacrosse team missed its first chance to play a season-opening game when the game was postponed because of poor conditions at an opponent's field.

The Golden Knights' second chance at an opener is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. against the Eagles of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The game is set to be played at Embry-Riddle Lacrosse Field in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Gannon's original season opener had been scheduled to be played Friday, Feb. 24, at Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester, N.Y. However, that game was postponed until March 8 because of unplayable conditions at Roberts Wesleyan's  field.

Coach Jennifer Pawlowski's Gannon squad will meet an Embry-Riddle team that was ranked No. 16 entering the season. The Eagles slipped to No. 19 in the poll after going 1-1 to open the season. Embry-Riddle lost to No. 15 Flagler 16-11 on Feb. 11. The Eagles then defeated Young Harris 18-9 on Feb. 15. They have been idle since then.

Gannon will have to contend with Embry-Riddle's sophomore sister duo of Alexa and Kenley Zeruto. Alexa Zeruto has a team-high 10 points on three goals and seven assists. Kenley Zeruto has a team-high six goals and eight points.

Another sophomore, Anna Maurer, has eight points, including seven assists, which ties her with Alexa Zeruto for the team high.

Gannon figures to rely offensively on juniors Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) and McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), sophomore Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool), and senior Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden). They were Gannon's top scorers in the 2022 lineup.

Defensively, Gannon will look for leadership from Alexandra Kehrig (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), Lauren Squires (Big Flats, N.Y./Horseheads), and Emma Uhrig (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate).
