Gannon Pushes Across Three Runs in Tenth after Findlay Sends Game into Extra Innings

DAVENPORT, Fla. – After seeing Findlay rally from a three-run deficit to send the game into extra innings, Gannon pushed across three runs in the top of the tenth inning for a 9-6 win over the Oilers on Monday afternoon. The two teams were meeting for the third time in two days. Gannon is now 3-4 after winning two of the three meetings with Findlay while the Oilers dropped to 4-3.

Thanks to a Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) single that drove in Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) in the top of the eight inning, Gannon led 6-3 and needed six outs to close out the win. Findlay scored once in the bottom of the inning and entered the bottom of the ninth inning down 6-4. Connor DeMoss (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown Area) was one out away from securing the win, but Cam Farrar's two-out single to left center tied the game at 6-6. The righthander was able to end the inning with a strikeout with runners on first and second.

The Golden Knights were unfazed. Kalbfus tripled to right field with one out. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) followed with a home run to right field, the graduate student's first of the season. Gannon added a third run in the inning with two outs on freshman Reece Colvin's (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) infield single.

Findlay opened the scoring in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. A leadoff walk, wild pitch and error produced the run but starter Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) stranded a runner on third with a strikeout.

Gannon struck for four runs in the top of the second. Kalbfus was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second. Cam Marciniak's (Johnsonburg, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) single to left drove in Kalbfus, and Cam Vozel's double made it second and third. A walk to Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) loaded the bases and Colvin followed with a two-run double to left. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) drove in Zeroski with the fourth run with a groundout. The Golden Knights took a 5-1 lead with a run in the fifth. Zeroski led off the inning with a walk and scored on Vega's single up the middle.

Findlay matched that run with a two-out double, just the second hit allowed by Schott. Corey Shields (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) relieved Schott with runners on second and third. The transfer from Mercyhurst got the final out, but Findlay was able to score its third run thanks to a rundown.

Schott, a junior lefthander, was in line for his second career win while turning in a brilliant outing. In 5.2 innings, the longest stint of his career, he allowed two hits, walked four and struck out a career-high nine.

Shields allowed one hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings. DeMoss, also a transfer from Mercyhurst, picked up his first victory as a Golden Knight. He came back out in the tenth inning and retired the side in order.

Gannon finished with 13 hits while limiting Findlay to five. Vega was 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and three stolen bases. Colvin paced an all-freshman outfield for the Golden Knights with a 2-for-5 effort with three runs batted in. Kalbfus was 2-for-4 with a triple and stolen base and Cam Vozel also had two hits in four at bats.

The Golden Knights return to action on Tuesday facing Davenport at 5:30 p.m. They then have a day off in Florida before returning to the diamond on Thursday.
