Visha, Graeber Hurl Gem but Golden Knights Lose to Davenport 2-1

DAVENPORT, Fla. – After playing several slugfests the Gannon baseball team found themselves in a pitcher's duel on Tuesday. One swing of the bat made the difference as Davenport handed Gannon a 2-1 defeat in a nine-inning game as part of Gannon's Florida trip. The Golden Knights are now 3-5 while the Panthers improved to 4-6.

Gannon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) reached on an infield single with one out. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on Ian Hess' (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) two-out single to center.

Jake Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) was masterful after that, as the southpaw held Davenport scoreless for five innings. The Panthers finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Gaetano Vallone got on base with an infield single with one out. After a strikeout, Khale Showers drove a pitch over the left centerfield wall for a two-run homer and a 2-1 Davenport lead.

That was enough for starter Isaac Van Dyke and reliever Logan Bursick. Van Dyke went the first seven innings, allowing just the run in the first, and Bursick threw two hitless innings to pick up the save. The duo combined to retire the last 13 Gannon batters.

Visha was the hard-luck loser while going to 0-1 on the season. He lasted into the seventh inning, going six innings and allowing four hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Matt Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) threw the final two innings, walking one and striking out four.

In addition to Koroly and Hess, Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy), Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) had singles for the Golden Knights. They outhit Davenport 5-4.

The Golden Knights have a much-needed day off before returning to the diamond on Thursday to play Minnesota State-Mankato.
