Golden Knights Split with Findlay Thanks to Boyer's Pitching, Rakow's Game-Winning Base Hit

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Thanks to the best pitching performance of Jaret Boyer's (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) young career and some timely hitting Gannon split a doubleheader with Findlay on Sunday afternoon while on the second day of their southern trip to Florida. Boyer, a sophomore, pitched his first career complete game and Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) capped a Golden Knight rally with a two-out single in the sixth as Gannon handed the Oilers a 4-3 defeat. Findlay outscored Gannon 14-7 in the opener.

Oddly enough three of Gannon's four runs in the second game came with two outs. In the first game the Golden Knights scored seven runs but were unable to come up with timely hits.

Gannon (2-4) and Findlay (3-2) will meet for a third time on Monday in a nine-inning game beginning at

Game 1 – Findlay 14, Gannon 7
Gannon grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) singled to center with two outs to drive in Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside), who led off the inning with a single. Findlay answered with four unearned runs in the top of the third inning to chase starter Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) after the junior had breezed through the first two innings. All four runs scored with two outs, two crossing the plate on an error. The Oilers added four more runs in the top of the fourth with the big hit a two-run home by Casey Maruniak. Gannon closed the gap to 8-4 with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Koroly drove in a run with a one-out single to left and Brandon Wetherholt's (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) sacrifice fly drove in another run. Ian Hess's (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) two-out single accounted for the third run. Both teams scored in the fifth inning to make it 9-5 heading into the sixth, with Gannon's run scoring on a double-play grounder. The Golden Knights were unable to keep the Oilers at bay in the sixth. They scored four runs for the third inning in the game to boost their lead to 13-5, three coming on a home run by Aiden Lao. Gannon scored a pair of runs in the seventh to make the final 14-7. One scored on a wild pitch and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly. Gannon ended up out-hitting Findlay 14-13, but the Golden Knights were unable to come up with the big hit. They left nine runners on base, including five in scoring position. Five different players had two hits apiece – Zeroski, Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic), Gagnon, and Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).

Game 2 – Gannon 4, Findlay 3
Gannon rallied from a 3-0 deficit behind the strong pitching of Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington). The sophomore allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third before settling in to hold the Oilers scoreless over the final four innings. The Gannon bats came alive after being shut out over the first three innings. Freshman Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) led off the top of the fourth with a triple and scored on an error. With two outs Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) made it 3-2 with an RBI double to right center. Gannon tied it 3-3 in the fifth when Colvin drove in Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) with two outs with a ground rule double. Zeroski had reached base on a single and advanced to second on an error. The Golden Knights came up with some two-out magic in the sixth inning, as well, in the process pushing across the winning run. With two outs Gagnon singled center and stole second. He scored when Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) hit a single through the right side. Boyer made the run hold up. He retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth inning and got the first two outs in the seventh before hitting a batter. The game ended on a ground out to third base as the righthander tossed his first career complete game. He scattered six hits, walked one, and struck out a career-high 10 batters. In his first career start in center field Colvin went 3-for-4 with a double and triple. Gagnon and Rakow had two hits apiece as Gannon totaled nine hits.
