Hobbs Scores Season-High 20 Points as No.11/12 Gannon Falls to Hot-Shooting Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Gannon head coach Jordan Fee recently cautioned that his Golden Knights would encounter some adversity at some point. On Saturday the first-year coach was prophetic as he tasted defeat for the first time as a head coach with a 99-78 loss at Millersville. Gannon is now 10-1 overall and 4-1 in PSAC action while Millersville improved to 8-3 and 3-2, respectively.

The Golden Knights came in ranked 11th in the NABC Division II Top 25 and were 12th in the D2CSC poll. They were attempting to run the gauntlet against the top teams in the PSAC East following 20-point wins over East Stroudsburg and West Chester. In addition, they entered looking to extend the longest winning streak since the 2001-02 season.

Millersville was picked to finish third in the Eastern Division after winning 18 games last year. The Marauders jumped on the Golden Knights right out of the gate scoring the first 14 points of the game and making 11 of their first 15 shots. Gannon was never able to fully recover while suffering an off-shooting day.

Millersville, meanwhile, shot a sizzling 66.0 percent for the game, making 33-of-50 shots. That included an 8-of-12 chart from beyond the arc. Gannon, meanwhile, shot 44.0 percent (28-of-63) from the floor and made 7-of-22 3-pointers.

The game also pitted two teams that took advantage of the charity stripe. Gannon came in leading Division II in free throws made per game while Millersville had shot close to 100 more free throws than its opponents in the first ten games. On Saturday Gannon was 15-of-21 from the line and Millersville 25-of-31.

Zachary Hobbs (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesa) paced a trio of Golden Knights in double figures as Gannon was held to a season-low point total. The graduate student from Indiana State dropped in 5-of-12 3-pointers and ended the day with a season-high 20 points.

Josh Omojafo (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) added 18 points, making 9-of-11 free throws, while Derrick James (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester) made 7-of-11 field goals to finish with 14 points. James added four assists and three steals. Derrick Anderson (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) contributed eight points and three steals while Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md./South Kent) led Gannon with five steals.

Despite the final score the Golden Knights played their normal pressing style, registering 17 steals while forcing 26 turnovers. Gannon held a 29-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

For the second straight year Matt Dade tormented the Golden Knights. A year ago the 6'6" senior scored on a turnaround jumper with 2.4 seconds remaining for the winning points in a 66-64 game. On Saturday the two-time All-PSAC East performer finished with 34 points to lead five Marauders in double figures.

The Golden Knights return to start a new winning streak on Wednesday, January 3 hosting Mansfield with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The game will mark the first at their home-away-from-home, Cathedral Prep's Hagerty Family Events Center, while renovations begin at the Highmark Events Center.
