Eight Score in Double Figures as No. 17/12 Gannon Again Goes over the Century Mark in Win over Mansfield

ERIE, Pa. – Eight players scored in double figures and Gannon used several of its patented lightning-quick scoring runs for a 116-75 win over Mansfield on Wednesday evening. The Golden Knights, ranked 17th in the NABC Division II Top 25 and 12th in the D2CSC poll, were playing for the first time at Cathedral Prep's Hagerty Family Events Center.

Gannon improved to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in PSAC action while Mansfield is now 3-8 and 1-5, respectively. The Golden Knights were playing for the first time since suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday at Millersville.

Saturday's game saw the Golden Knights fall behind 14-0 and they were never able to recover. This evening Mansfield jumped out to a 10-2 lead but this time Gannon wasn't fazed. Trailing 18-11 just over six minutes into the game the Golden Knights went on a 14-0 run in less than three minutes to take the lead for good at 25-18.

Zachary Hobbs (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesa) keyed the spurt. The transfer from Indiana State pulled Gannon within a point with a steal and a layup. Lyle Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Philadelphia Montgomery Christian Academy) followed with a steal and fed Hobbs for a 3-pointer for a 20-18 lead. Freshman Mike Montano (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) capped the run with a traditional 3-point play.

Gannon led 47-34 at the half but the Golden Knights' press eventually wore down the Mountaineers and Gannon outscored Mansfield 69-41 over the final twenty minutes. The Golden Knights shot 60.0 percent (24-of-40) in the second half.

The Golden Knights enjoyed several runs in the second half, but one in particularly that signaled the end for the Mountaineers. Leading 64-45, Nathan Schneider (Kersey, Pa./St. Marys Area) drained a 3-pointer. Following a Mansfield basket Schneider came back with another 3-pointer, and Montano's steal led to a 3-pointer by Derrick Anderson (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman). That gave the Golden Knights a 73-47 lead as Mansfield called timeout. The three 3-pointers came in a span of 44 seconds.

The top scoring team in Division II, Gannon would reach 100 points for the ninth time in 12 games. Twelve of Gannon's 14 players scored with eight reaching double figures for the second time this season. Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md./South Kent) and Schneider led the way with 15 points with each going 5-for-7 from the floor and making 3-of-4 free throws. Josh Omojafo (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) added 14 points while Anderson, Hobbs and Montano all scored 13 points. Montano added six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Tipton stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, five steals and three blocked shots. Derrick James (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester) finished with 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Gannon ended the night shooting 56.2 percent from the floor (41-of-73), making 13-of-30 3-pointers, and going 21-of-28 from the floor. Mansfield shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68), making 6-of-26 3-pointers, and went 13-of-17 at the line. Gannon forced Mansfield into 27 turnovers while committing just 15. The Golden Knights held a massive 41-15 edge in points off turnovers.

The Golden Knights are back in action on Saturday, January 6 in a showdown of nationally-ranked teams. The Vulcans are ranked ninth in this week's NABC Top 25. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
