Gannon moves into second place after opening round of Michael Corbett Fall Classic

Sarah White shoots 75 to tie for second place after opening round of GU's fall tourney

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's golf team is in position for another strong finish after the opening day of GU's Michael Corbett Fall Classic at Whispering Woods Golf Club on Sunday.

Coach Scott Stano's Golden Knights moved into second place in the nine-team tournament one day after claiming the title in the Evann Parker Memorial. Playing in brisk, rainy, windy conditions for the second consecutive day, Gannon shot a collective 313. Ohio Dominican shot 307 to take a six-stroke lead. It could be a two-team race for the title on Monday because the third-place team, Charleston, is 15 shots behind Gannon.

Senior Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) had a good day despite the tough conditions, shooting a 3-over-par 75 to move into a tie for second place.

Junior Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) moved into fourth place with a 5-over 77, and freshman Cloe Mateo (Sabadell, Spain/Montcau la Mola) was tied for sixth with a 79.

Junior Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor), who won the Evann Parker Memorial title, opened the Corbett Classic with a 82 and was tied for 12th. Freshman Samantha Turk (Euclid, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph)           (14th, 83) and sophomore Zoey McClain (Erie, Pa./McDowell) (19th, 84) also finished Sunday among the top 20.

The tournament will conclude on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. tee off.
