Golden Knights Hold Successful Maroon & Gold Wrestle-offs

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon men's wrestling head coach Tom Boyd had his first opportunity to see his 2023-24 Golden Knights in a competitive setting for the first time on Saturday. Gannon held its annual Maroon & Golde Wrestle-offs on Saturday at the Recreation and Wellness Center.

The wrestle-offs hopefully will help Boyd who will enter the starting lineup, although the Golden Knights open the season next Saturday, November 4 in the Mount Union Invitational. Many of the grapplers who competed on Saturday will likely take to the mats.

Gannon lost four wrestlers who were either All-Americans last year or previously. Several other national qualifiers return, and two proved they're not about to give up their spots in the lineup any time soon. Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) defeated Hunter Robison (Edinboro, Pa./Saegertown) twice at 125 lbs. by scores of 14-8 and 14-6.

Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) qualified for Nationals last year at 141 lbs. but looks to move up to 149 lbs. He won by technical fall twice over Mateo Caso (Walla Walla, Wash./Walla Walla) by scores of 17-2 and 19-3.
One interesting result occurred at 133 lbs. with freshman Jeremiah Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) handing returning starter Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) a pair of defeats, prevailing 2-0 and 4-1. Echevarria won all three of his matches while McLaughlin won by fall before the two losses to Echevarria.
