FINDLAY, Ohio – Four Gannon golfers shot two rounds in the 70s on Monday as the GU women's golf team started strongly at the highly competitive University of Findlay's William Beall Fall Classic.
Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole),
Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor),
Victoria Colmenares (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/ICL Academy), and
Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) each posted two sub-80 rounds during the 36-hole opening round while playing in hot conditions at Findlay Country Club.
Gannon is in fifth place at 35-over-par 611 (304, 307), which was 24 shots behind first-place Indianapolis (11-over 587) in the 14-team field. GU also trailed Findlay (588), Wayne State (600), and Grand Valley State (602) in the team standings.
"I'm very proud of how we performed today. Today was a long day and a total grind," Gannon coach
Scott Stano said. "I'm very proud of shooting the best individual rounds we ever shot here."
Petersen, a junior, led Gannon with 148 after rounds of 72 in the morning and 76 in the afternoon. She was tied for 11th place in the 84-golfer field. She had five birdies on the day.
Martinez, a junior, was tied for 20th after rounds of 78 and 73 for a 151. Her second round was highlighted by a 3-under 33 on the front nine.
Colmenares, freshman, was tied for 30th (76-79–155) and White, a senior, was tied for 38th (78-79–157). Colmenares recovered after going 5-over on the first eight holes of the opening round as she made three birdies and went 1-under over the final 10 holes. White had four birdies in her second round.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday.
"Tomorrow will be a fun day," Stano said. "We knew this is an extremely competitive tournament, and our goal going into was to finish in the top half. With today's performance, we put ourselves in a place in which we can exceed our goals and that's exciting. The team is pumped for the opportunity tomorrow to continue their strong play."
