Golden Knights Drop California Opener at Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Gannon men's water polo team made its first trip to California since first-year head coach Zarko Sadikovic was a player in 2018 and came away with a 13-8 loss at Cal Lutheran on Thursday night. The Golden Knights are now 6-5 and will play at Biola at 2 p.m. Eastern time on Friday.

Gannon opened the scoring 50 seconds into the match on the first of Alexandros Kotskar's (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) two goals, assisted by Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore). It took Cal Lutheran just 20 seconds to even the score at 1-1.

Cal Lutheran grabbed a 2-1 lead with just over a minute remaining as neither team scored for over five minutes. The Kingsmen found the back of the net again with just 21 seconds remaining in the quarter as Cal Lutheran held a 3-1 lead after one quarter.

The Kingsmen built their lead to 5-1 with a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the second period. Gannon finally snapped the five-goal run on a goal by Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier), Kotskar assisting, at 3:40, but once again Cal Lutheran answered right back in just 19 seconds. The teams went to halftime with Cal Lutheran holding the 7-2 lead.

Trailing 8-2 midway through the third period, Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) took a pass from Jordan Kraus (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and scored to make it 8-3. Kaverman and Fribourg scored later in the period as Cal Lutheran led 9-5 after three quarters. Gannon was unable to pull closer then four goals over the final eight minutes.

Numerous turnovers led to a 35-20 edge in shots for Cal Lutheran. Gannon actually had a higher shooting percentage at 40.0 pct. Compared to 37.1 pct. For Cal Lutheran. Goalie Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) survived the barrage with 13 saves. Neither team was able to score on the power play. While Gannon stopped all seven attempts by the Kingsmen, the Golden Knights were 0-for-13 on the power play.
