Golden Knights Earn Split of Two Matches in the Big Apple

Gannon defeats LIU, loses to No. 17 Fordham

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Gannon men's water polo team was able to take a little bit of a bite out of the Big Apple while playing a pair of matches on Saturday. The Golden Knights rallied from an early deficit to defeat LIU for the second time this year, winning 14-10, before suffering a 21-9 loss to No. 17 Fordham. The Golden Knights are now 6-3 after returning to the pool for the first time since September 24 on Friday night.

Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) continued his strong play with two goals and two assists vs. LIU and five goals and an assist against Fordham. The sophomore now has 41 goals.

Gannon goes from one coast to the other next week. The Golden Knight journey to California for a pair of matches. They play at California Lutheran on Thursday, October 19 then play at Biola the next day.

Gannon 14, LIU 10
Gannon rallied from a halftime deficit to improve to 6-3. The Golden Knights trailed 5-4 at the half but outscored the Sharks 10-5 the rest of the way. Gannon opened the third quarter with four straight goals to claim the lead for good at 8-5. Matthew Harkrader gave the Golden Knights their first lead at 6-5, Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) followed with a power play goal at the 5:56 mark, and Kaverman found the back of the net for his third goal to make it 8-5. LIU stopped the run with a goal with five minutes left and the two teams exchanged goals to end three quarters with Gannon leading 10-7. The teams exchanged goals over the first minute, but goals by Fribourg and Kaverman gave Gannon its biggest lead at 13-8 with just over six minutes to play. LIU pulled to within 13-10 but Kotskar scored on the power play for a 14-10 margin with four minutes to play. Neither team would score the rest of the way. LIU held a slight 36-35 edge in shots. Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) was strong in goal with 11 saves.

The Rams scored the first six goals of the match before Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) got the Golden Knights on the board. Gannon wasn't able to recover from Fordham's fast start as the Rams led 9-1 after eight minutes. Fordham would end up with a 47-30 advantage in shots. Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) enjoyed a strong game with five goals and an assist, while Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) had a pair of goals.
