Gannon Wraps Up Play at Bruno Classic with Losses to Two More Nationally-Ranked Squads

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Gannon University men's water polo team concluded its opening tournament of the 2022 campaign with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked teams on Sunday in the Bruno Classic. Brown University hosted the two-day event at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
 
Gannon opened the day with a 28-8 loss to Fordham. The Rams came in ranked 17th in the Men's Varsity Top 20. In the afternoon, the Golden Knights put a scare into No. 19 St. Francis Brooklyn for over a half before suffering a 23-12 setback. The Golden Knights are now 0-4.
 
After facing a very strong field to open the season, head coach Shane Unger's team will have some team to prepare for its next competition on September 24-25. They will play in the Erie Crossover Weekend, hosted by Mercyhurst. Gannon plays Johns Hopkins and Mount St. Mary's the first day, followed by George Washington and Bucknell on day number two.
 
No. 17 Fordham 28, Gannon 8
The Golden Knights were unable to keep pace with a high-scoring Rams attack that outshout Gannon 36-17 while shooting a sizzling 77.8 percent. Gannon came in at a respectable 47.1 percent. No. 17 Fordham jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one period with freshman Alex Kotskar (Voula, Greece) scoring for Gannon at 4:52 off a pass from Marty Kaverman. The deficit grew to 11-1 before Kaverman found the back of the net at 4:31, assisted by Jordan Kraus (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Kotskar scored late in the period with Kraus again assisting, and a Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) goal at 1:17, assisted by Kotskar, left Gannon trailing 15-4 at the half. The score was 19-6 after three periods, with Kotskar scoring both GU goals. The first was assisted by Kraus and the second by Kaverman. The Rams kept up the attack in the fourth quarter, outscoring Gannon 9-2. Kotskar scored his fifth goal of the match with John Vieira (Erie, Pa/Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (McDowell)) credited with the assist, marking his second straight game with five goals. Kaverman ended the Gannon scoring with his second goal at the 5:47 mark on a penalty shot to make it 23-8. Fordham ran off the final five goals. Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) played the first half in goal and had four saves with Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) taking over in the second half and recording a save.

No. 20 St. Francis Brooklyn 23, Gannon 12
 Gannon grabbed its first lead of the season when Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) scored off a feed from Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) just over a minute into the contest for a 1-0 lead. A Paco Palacian (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) goal, the first of the freshman's career, made it 2-0 at 5:06, with Marty Kaverman picking up the assist. St. Francis scored back-to-back goals to tie it, but Gannon regained the lead at 3-2 on Seth Johnson's (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) goal, assisted by Mickic. St. Francis ran off the next five goals to lead 7-3 after one quarter. Gannon trailed 10-5 at the half, with Fribourg and Mickic scoring goals in the second period. The Terriers gained control midway through the third quarter. Back-to-back goals by Mickic and Kaverman, the latter at the 3:54 mark, pulled the Golden Knights to within 12-8. St. Francis proceeded to score six of the next seven goals to begin to pull away at 18-9. Freshman Parker Wilk (Sanford, Fla./Seminole) scored his second goal of the game, and Fribourg followed with a power play goal to make it 18-11, but four straight goals by the Terriers finally put away the Golden Knights. St. Francis held a 37-28 advantage in shots and Gannon again faced a hot team as the Terriers converted on 62.2 percent. Gannon was at 42.9 percent. while scoring a season-high 12 goals. Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) went the entire way in goal and had seven saves.
