Freshman Kotskar Leads the Way for Gannon in First Day of Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Gannon University men's water polo team opened the 2022 campaign facing a strong field in the two-day Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University. Freshman Alex Kotskar stood out on day one for the Golden Knights. He debuted with a goal and an assist, then led the Golden Knights with five goals and a pair of assists vs. Brown.
 
The going doesn't get any easier on Sunday, with the Golden Knights facing two more ranked teams. They swim against No. 17 Fordham at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 3:45 p.m. match vs. No. 20 St. Francis (N.Y.).
 
Air Force 20, Gannon 5
The Falcons jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one period in the season opener for both teams. Following a pair of Air Force goals, Gannon picked up its first goal of the season at 4:05 to cut the deficit to 2-1, with Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) scoring on a pass from Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)). The Falcons ran off the next 11 goals, with Jackson Carter and Grant Snyder scoring four times apiece, for an imposing 13-1 advantage with 1:41 left in the first half. Marty Kaverman scored on a penalty shot 19 seconds later to make it 13-2 at the half. Air Force would outscore Gannon 4-2 in the third period, with scoring his second goal on a feed from freshman Alex Kotskar at the 5:02 mark, and Kaverman adding his second on a penalty shot at 1;34. Kotskar added his first career goal with 5:06 left in the match for Gannon's final goal. Air Force ended with a 32-21 advantage in shots, and the Falcons had a shooting percentage of .625 compared top .238 for the Golden Knights.

Gannon trailed 19th-ranked Brown 9-5 at the half, but Brown came out in the second half to score the first four goals and pull out to a 13-5 lead. Gannon scored the last two goals of the period. Alex Kotskar snapped that string with a goal at the 1:54 mark, assisted by Matthew Harkrader, and Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) notched his first goal of the season, assisted by Kotskar, with 31 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, Brown again opened the next period strong with three straight goals to pull ahead 16-7. The two teams would split the final four goals, John Vieira (Erie, Pa/Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (McDowell)) and Kotskar scoring for Gannon. Just a freshman playing in his second game, Kotskar finished with five goals and a pair of assists. Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) started in goal and despite facing a barrage of shots, finished with 12 saves while allowing nine goals. Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) played the second half and recorded seven saves. Brown finished with a 43-24 advantage in shots along with a .419 shooting percentage compared to .375 for Gannon.
