Orten Scores Twice as Golden Knights Defeat UPJ 5-0 for Fourth Straight Win

JOHNSTOWN, Pa.Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) scored twice to lead four players with goals as the Gannon men's soccer team won its fourth straight match, a 3-0 win at Pitt-Johnstown. The Golden Knights improved to 7-2-1 overall and are now 2-0-1 in PSAC West action. UPJ dropped to 1-5-1 and 0-3-0, respectively.

The Mountain Cats gave the Golden Knights a tough time a year ago, dropping a 1-0 decision and tying Gannon at Pitt-Johnstown Field 3-3 in two overtimes.

Gannon dominated the play throughout but did not find the back of the net until the 30th minute. That's when Toby Gower's (Norwich, England/Long Stratton) free kick from the far right corner found Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000) in front of the net.  The sophomore headed the ball in from 12 yards out to the top of the goal past UPJ goalkeeper Jacob Tichnell at 29:26. It was Corti's first goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 at the half despite a 15-2 advantage in shots by Gannon. While Tichnell recorded 12 saves, the Golden Knights scored four more goals over the final 45 minutes, two in the final minute.

Gannon would score twice in a span of four minutes early in the second half. Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) made it 2-0 with his fourth goal of the season at 51:26 thanks to a pass from Peter Wagner (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep). The lead grew to 3-0 at 55:22 on Orten's first goal, assisted by Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain). UPJ was able to keep Del Castillo, the nation's leading scorer, without a goal. The senior midfielder had scored 10 goals in the previous three matches.

The Golden Knights scored twice in the final minute. The first was the initial goal of the season for Layton Bingham (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) at 89:01. Forty-five seconds later Orten, a freshman, deposited his third goal of the season into the back of the net with an assist from Jake Sterio (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).

Gannon held a 33-3 advantage in shots, including 17-0 on goal, along with an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II), a freshman from Spain, made his first appearance in goal for the Golden Knights. He did not make a save.

The Golden Knights will look for their fifth straight win on Saturday, October 1 when they look to celebrate Homecoming with a victory over California (Pa.). The match gets underway at 7:30 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium. It begins a stretch of four straight games at home.
