Gannon, Seton Hill Battle to 2-2 Tie in PSAC West Opener

ERIE, Pa. – A year ago Gannon and Seton Hill met on three occasions, the last a first-round match in the PSAC Quarterfinals. The Golden Knights claimed victory in all three matches, but all by just a goal. Such was the case again in the first meeting of the season between the two PSAC West rivals on Saturday night at McConnell Family Stadium. The end result was a 2-2 tie as Gannon is now 7-0-2 in the last nine meetings with the Griffins.

The contest was a battle of two of the top teams in the PSAC West, with Gannon a co-favorite in the Western Division in the coaches' preseason poll and Seton Hill picked third. The tie moves the Golden Knights to 3-1-1 while the Griffins are a deceiving 0-4-1, with two of the losses to nationally-ranked teams. Gannon came in receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25.

Seton Hill opened the scoring just 67 seconds into the match as Benjamin Nicholson scored on a shot to the lower right portion of the net thanks to a pass from Fletcher Amos.

The score remained that way until late in the first half. Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) recorded his third goal of the season as the senior midfielder headed a ball past goalkeeper Nathaniel Huff into the high right corner of the net. The chance came from a Shota Toyama (Kanagawa, Japan) corner kick which swung in and found the head of Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000), who nodded it over to Del Castillo for the equalizing goal at the 40:53 mark. The two teams headed into halftime tied at 1-1.

Gannon took the lead early in the second half when Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain), a junior defender, scored his first goal as a Golden Knight, with Toyama picking up his second assist of the match with another great inswinger from a corner kick. The goal came at 48:56 to put Gannon up 2-1.

Seton Hill evened matters in the 67th minute on the counterattack as Cal Pritchard's shot into the left corner got past goalkeeper David Synstelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende). Anton Dupont Linden assisted on the goal after getting free down the left wing, cutting inside, and flashing a low cross over to Pritchard.

While the score was even, Gannon dominated the action, outshooting Seton Hill 20-4. That included 6-3 in shots on goal. Gannon had 10 corner kicks while Seton Hill failed to have a corner kick. Huff totaled three saves while Synstelien did not record a save.

The going doesn't get any easier for head coach Billy Colton's team as they make the journey to the nation's capital to play at the District of Columbia on Wednesday, September 14. The match is set to get underway at 12 noon on RFK Field 1.
