WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gannon University men's soccer team created a bevy of chances but could not find an equalizing goal in Wednesday's non-conference road match with the University of the District of Columbia, falling 1-0 to the Firebirds. The only goal of the contest came in the 6
th minute, as UDC's Ignacio Pericent converted from the penalty spot to open the scoring. The Golden Knights ratcheted up the pressure and dominated play after that to the tune of 24 shots to UDC's five and 11 corner kicks to just one for the Firebirds. Gannon's record moves to 3-2-1 overall (0-0-1 PSAC West) while UDC improves to 4-2-1 overall.
Â
UDC goalkeeper Javier Abadia Torres made 10 saves in the contest and prevented several would-be Gannon goals from going in, perhaps most notably on a bullet header by
Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) in the 80
th minute. Del Castillo,
James Pool (Hastings, England/Claverham),
Benjamin Querling (Zuelpich, Germany/Emil-Fischer Gymnasium), and
Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) each finished the game tied for the team lead with three shots apiece, with
Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000),
Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo),
Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School),
Lennox Crews (Offenbach, Germany/Leibnizschule), and
Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway) each firing two shots on the day. Gannon keeper
David Synstelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende) made three saves to increase his season total to 17. He has played every minute in goal for the Golden Knights in 2022.
Â
Gannon returns home this coming Saturday, Sept. 17 to host Wheeling University for another non-conference tilt at McConnell Family Stadium. First kick is set for 7:30 p.m.
