Gannon women's volleyball team gets first loss of season against unbeaten Missouri S&T

Miners sweep Golden Knights in opener of Hillsdale College's Charger Invitational

HILLSDALE, MI -- Both the Gannon and Missouri S&T women's volleyball teams entered Hillsdale College's Charger Invitational unbeaten in every match and every set this season.

Missouri S&T left the match with the same status after the Miners swept the No. 17-ranked Golden Knights 25-18, 25-19, 25-14 on Thursday afternoon.

Missouri S&T improved to 5-0 and has won all 15 sets it has played this season. The Miners showed tremendous power in their hitting, and their front line was able to continually find holes in the Gannon defense. Abigail Widiker led the Miners with 12 kills, and Shelby Ply and Madelyn Mason each had 10 kills.

Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) led Gannon with 10 kills and six digs. Sengisu Arslan had 13 assists.

"Today's match featured a good, experienced team playing at a high level and another team that is still figuring itself out and therefore took it on the chin," said Gannon coach Matt Darling. "We were the latter team, but hopefully we can take the lessons offered to us by Missouri S&T, a well-coached team that knows what it's doing.  I'm looking forward to getting us back on the court tomorrow."

Gannon dropped to 3-1 in the first of four matches in the tournament. The Knights will play twice Friday and once Saturday, including matches against nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines and Hillsdale. Gannon will meet Ferris State at noon on Friday and the face Hillsdale at 6 p.m.
