No. 18 Gannon Ends Three-Game Road Swing with 1-0 Setback at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Gannon men's soccer team wrapped up its three-game road trip with a narrow 1-0 loss at Ashland on Wednesday evening. The setback drops 18th-ranked Gannon to 2-1-0 on the young season, while Ashland improved to 1-0-1.

The Golden Knights had won the last two meetings with the Eagles by identical 2-1 scores, and Wednesday's match was another tight contest. Ashland served notice over the weekend that the Eagles would provide a stern test after going on the road and tying No. 6 Millersville, 1-1.

For almost sixty minutes the two teams battled on even terms, but Ashland would gain the upper hand in the 60th minute. Jack Grove took a header pass from Floris Kluemper and beat goalkeeper David Synstelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende) on a low shot to the right for the match's lone goal at 59:23.

Ashland goalkeeper Ty Bowden was able to make the lone goal stand up. Gannon pressured Bowden in the final ten minutes, with All-American Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) getting off a pair of shots that were snared by Bowden. The second came in the 84th minute off a header.

Ashland ended the night with 14 shots compared to nine for the Golden Knights. That included a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Synstelien and Bowden both ended the night with five saves.

Gannon finally debuts at home on Sunday, September 4 hosting Wilmington (Del.) at 12 noon. It's the first of back-to-back home games. The Wildcats reached the second round of the NCAA Super Region 1 and finished 16-4-1. They are 1-1-1 after a 3-1 upset of Millersville on Wednesday. A year ago Wilmington won a 2-1 decision over Gannon.
