No. 18 Golden Knights Overcome Lightning Delay, Georgian Court Rally to Open Season with 3-2 Victory

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Gannon University men's soccer team enjoyed a successful opening to the 2022 campaign on Friday with a 3-2 win at Georgian Court. The Golden Knights entered the year ranked 18th in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Preseason Top 25 and as the preseason co-favorite in the PSAC West.

Gannon used a dominant first half to subdue a Lions team that is rated one of the best in the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference. It was a first half that was interrupted by a lengthy lightning delay with Gannon holding a 1-0 advantage.

Lennox Crews (Offenbach, Germany/Leibnizschule) gave the Golden Knights that 1-0 lead as the senior midfielder beat Lions' goalkeeper Andrew Manzano at the 21:00 minute mark. Not long after lightning in the area forced a stoppage, All-American Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) boosted Gannon's lead to 2-0 at 37:27. The senior's goal came courtesy of an assist by newcomer Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain).

In addition to the 2-0 lead, Gannon held a 7-2 edge in shots in the first half. In addition, the Golden Knights had three corner kicks to none.
Gannon's lead grew to a seemingly safe 3-0 less than nine minutes into the second half, with Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) feeding Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway), as the freshman from Norway scored his first career goal at the 53:35 mark.

Georgian Court would make things interesting for the Golden Knights after that. Just over three minutes after Orten's goal, the Lions found the back of the net on David Tuschmann's goal at 56:49. When Brandon Sogness scored at 68:11, Georgian Court had cut the deficit to a goal at 3-2.

With David Synstelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende) in goal, the Golden Knights held off the Lions the rest of the way. The junior recorded four saves as Georgian Court ended the game with an 11-10 advantage in shots, including 6-5 in shots on goal. Manzano finished with a pair of saves for the Lions.

Gannon will look for a second straight win while opening the season with three straight road matches on Sunday, August 28 playing at another CACC foe, Goldey-Beacom. The action gets underway at 12 noon.
