Mjimba selected to represent Zimbabwe at 19th Annual FINA World Championships

ERIE, Pa. – Nomvula Mjimba (Harare, Zimbabwe/The Wykeham Collegiate), a rising sophomore from the Gannon University women's swimming and diving team, has been selected as one of just four total swimmers to represent Zimbabwe at the upcoming 19th Annual FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The world championships include five aquatic disciplines (swimming, diving, water polo, open water, and artistic swimming) while the swimming events begin on Saturday, June 18 and run through Saturday, June 25.

Mjimba will compete in two events: the 100 meter freestyle (scheduled for Wednesday, June 22) and the 50 meter freestyle (scheduled for Friday, June 24.) In her last competition of the collegiate season, the 2022 PSAC Championships, she earned personal-best times in the 50 yard freestyle (24.42) and 100-yard freestyle (53.34.) She also played a key role in the success of three relays--the 200 free, 400 free, and 200 medley--at that Championship meet.

"I'm ecstatic and proud of Nomvula for being named to the Zimbabwe national team for Worlds," said women's swimming and diving head coach Jacqueline Michalski. "As a freshman she was able to positively impact our team not only in the pool, but also in the classroom. She has added a layer of depth and knowledge to our team culture, helping to guide her teammates during the 2021-22 season.  She has a bright future, and the Gannon Family cannot wait to cheer her on at the end of this month in Budapest."

FINA, an International Swimming Federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering water sports competitions, was founded in 1908 and holds its World Championships every two years opposite of the summer Olympics. This meet, similar to the Olympics, is contested in a 50 meter pool and all events are held in a long course. A full schedule of events for the 19th Annual FINA World Championships can be found here.
