Tatone Pitches Gannon to Split at Cal in Completion of Suspended Doubleheader

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Gannon softball team was finally able to get its softball doubleheader in at Cal. It was originally scheduled for April 8 but postponed. The two teams completed two innings on April 11 in the makeup date before rain forced suspension of the games until today. Cal would go on to win the first game 7-2, but Gannon back with a 5-2 triumph in the second game to earn a split.

Cal remains atop the PSAC West with a 10-2 record in league play and 20-9 overall. Gannon is now 18-12 overall and 10-4 in conference action.
Gannon lost game number one despite pounding out 12 hits, and they added 11 hits in the nightcap. The second game featured a complete-game effort by Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe), who improved to 7-3.

The Golden Knights wrap up the regular season with a pair of doubleheaders at the end of the week. They play at Mercyhurst on Friday, April 29 and at Lock Haven on Saturday, April 30. Gannon split an earlier non-conference doubleheader with Mercyhurst. The Lock Haven games are non-conference games.

GAME 1 – Cal 7, Gannon 2
In a game that was picked up in the third inning with Cal leading 2-1, the Vulcans pushed across three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. Gannon outhit Cal 12-6 but the Golden Knights left 11 on base, including five in scoring position. The Golden Knights grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) singled, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The Vulcans answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, then took the lead for good with a run in the second. Cal's lead grew to 5-1 with three runs in the fifth, two scoring on a home run by Charity Henderson. Gannon looked to rally in the top of the fifth as Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) opened the inning with a single and Bush followed with a walk. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) loaded the bases with a single to right field, and Dietrick came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Lindsay Schmidt (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian). Lily Gfeller's (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) single up the middle loaded the bases again, but a double play ended the inning at 5-2. Cal took advantage of an error and three walks in the fifth as the Vulcans' lead grew to 7-2. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, while Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) was 2-for-4.

GAME 2 – Gannon 5, Cal 2
The Golden Knights earned a split with the Vulcans thanks to a strong outing by Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) in the circle and a three-run fifth inning. Tatone overcame eights and four walks to limit Cal to just two runs. She struck out five while improving to 7-3. Just as the first game, the Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, loading the bases before Lindsay Schmidt (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian) hit an RBI single to center field. Unfortunately, the Vulcans turned a double play on the next batter. Cal tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Gannon grabbed the lead for good with a run in the top of the third. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) stroked her sixth straight hit in the doubleheader with a single with one out. Following another out she stole second and scored on a single to center by Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central). The Golden Knights plated three runs in the fifth on the strength of four hits, and they ended up leaving the bases loaded. Abby Girman's RBI single drove in Schmidt, who led off the inning with a single. Pinch hitter Mackenzie Ming (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) followed with a single up the middle to score another run. Lauryn Rougeux's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) second hit of the game loaded the bases, and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) coaxed a walk to score Gannon's fifth run. Cal answered with a run in the fifth inning, then made things interesting starting the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles to lead off the inning. Tatone retired the next two batters, but a walk loaded the bases. The game ended with a lineout to shortstop. Gannon finished with 11 hits, with four players contributing a pair of hits. Ryan was 2-for-3, while DeMatteis, Schmidt and Rougeux each went 2-for-4.
