Sidare Hits Third Homer as Golden Knights Lose Twice at Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday afternoon while playing at crosstown-rival Mercyhurst. The Golden Knights suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 loss in the opener, then fell by a 6-1 score in the nightcap.

Gannon is now 18-14 on the season and 10-6 in PSAC West action. Mercyhurst improved to 27-12 and is 8-6 in league action. The Golden Knights have now completed PSAC West play and have clinched a berth in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. They will be making their 11th straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament.

Gannon will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, playing a non-conference doubleheader at Lock Haven. The twinbill gets underway at 2:00 p.m.

GAME 1 – Mercyhurst 8, Gannon 7
In a wild game, Gannon scored five times in the fifth inning to claim a 6-3 lead, only to see the Lakers score four times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. The Golden Knights would tie the game on Kristina DeMatteis' (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) sacrifice fly to center, but Mercyhurst walked off with the win on a walk, a pair of hits, and a costly error, Gannon's third of the game. Mercyhurst scored a pair of runs in the opening inning and another run in the third for a 3-0 lead. Gannon got on the board in the top of the fourth when DeMatteis reached on a two-base error and scored on Katie Sidare's (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) RBI single through the left side. The Gannon bats came alive in the fifth with five hits, and more important, five runs for a 6-3 lead. Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) opened the frame with a double, with Andrea Watson (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area) pinch running. Watson would score on Lauryn Rougeux' (Erie, Pa./McDowell) RBI single to center. Gannon scored four more runs with two outs. Kristina DeMatteis' (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) two-run double plated Rougeux and Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic), who had singled. Sidare followed with a two-run home run to left for her third long ball of the season. Gannon made the most of seven hits, with Rougeux going 2-for-3 and Sidare 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) also drove in three runs.

GAME 2 – Mercyhurst 6, Gannon 1
The Golden Knights were limited to five hits by Morgan Hilty in the nightcap, while the Lakers had 13 hits. The game got off to a promising start as Gannon scored in the first inning as the first two batters got hits. Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) hit the second pitch of the game for a double to left center, and Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) followed with a single back to the pitcher. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) drove in the run with a fielders' choice. She would steal second and reach third but was left stranded there. After that just one runner would reach third the rest of the game. DeMatteis now has 105 career RBIs, which is tied for 12th all-time. The Lakers responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and took a 3-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. They put the contest away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits and a pair of Gannon errors. Bush had a pair of hits in three at bats and stole a pair of bases, giving her 16 on the season. That is tied for ninth in the season records.
