Sidare Named PSAC West Softball Athlete of the Week

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Gannon's Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) has been named the PSAC West Softball Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 17, with the league offices announcing the award today. It's the first Athlete of the Week honor for the sophomore and the second time a Golden Knight softball player has received Athlete of the Week honors. Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) was recently named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., Sidare provided Gannon with the play of the year to this point as the Golden Knights swept doubleheaders from Pitt-Johnstown and Indiana(Pa.) late last week to move into first place in the PSAC West. With Gannon trailing IUP 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a runner on second in the second game of Friday's doubleheader, she stepped to the plate and launched a home run to straightaway center field to give Gannon a 5-4 win.

The home run was the second of her career and came a day after she hit her first career home run, also a two-run shot, in the sixth inning of a 5-3 win over Pitt-Johnstown.

An outfielder/pitcher, Sidare played in four games for the week and had 5 hits in 12 at bats, a .417 average. She drove in four runs and scored five times. Three of her hits went for extra bases, with a double in addition to the two home runs.

Sidare is batting .286 on the season in 16 games, with 12 hits in 42 at bats. She has five doubles and a pair of home runs and has driven in eight runs.

Gannon returns to the diamond on Friday, April 22 playing a doubleheader at Edinboro. The Golden Knights have won four straight games and seven of their last eight to improve to 15-9 overall and 7-1 in PSAC West action.
