– The Gannon baseball team will take a break from the rigors of the PSAC to play a single nine-inning game at Ashland on Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex.

Gannon, under first-year head coach DJ Cannon, comes in with a 16-9 record and is 7-5 in the PSAC West after splitting a four-game series with Slippery Rock this past weekend. The Golden Knights won game one of Saturday's doubleheader at SRU 7-4 thanks to a six-run rally in the top of the seventh inning before dropping game two 13-6. They are tied for third place in the PSAC West.

Ashland, members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, owns an 18-10 overall record and is 11-5 in conference play. The Eagles are in third place in the GMAC and have won seven of their last eight games.

Gannon and Ashland met earlier in the season in Florida, with the Golden Knights coming away with a 6-4 win on March 4. Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) pitched into the seventh inning to get the win and Gannon made the most of four hits. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) went 2-for-4 in that contest and drove in four runs, with three coming on a home run in the fourth inning.

Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) leads the Golden Knights with a .391 batting average, good for seventh in the PSAC, and is third in the conference in stolen bases with 17 in 19 attempts. He adds a team-high eight doubles. After a scorching start in Florida Kalbfus is not at .301, but the redshirt junior leads Gannon with seven home runs (tied for sixth in the PSAC) along with 24 RBIs. The redshirt junior has also played outstanding defense at third base.

The big story of late has been the hot bat of Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). The redshirt junior has rebounded from a slow start to boost his average to .269 after going 13-for-28 this past week. He has had two hits in six of his last eight games and hit five home runs in that period. The left-handed hitting first baseman is second on the team with six home runs, adding four doubles, and is tied for second in RBIs with 17. For his efforts Hess was selected the PSAC West Baseball Athlete of the Week. Hess stands second in career home runs at Gannon with 24, now three shy of Nate Cardy's school record of 27.

Following the Ashland contest, Gannon will return to PSAC action with a doubleheader at Clarion on Friday, April 15 followed by another twinbill against the Golden Eagles on Saturday, April 16 at McConnell Family Stadium.
