Golden Knights Debut at Home with Sweep of D'Youville

ERIE, Pa. – First-year head coach DJ Cannon made his home debut on Thursday at McConnell Family Stadium, and Gannon rewarded him with a pair of wins over D'Youville. The Golden Knights used an impressive pitching performance by Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) for a 2-0 win in game one, then the bats warmed up in the nightcap for a 9-4 win.
The two wins boosted Gannon's winning streak to four games. The Knights improved to 7-3 while D'Youville is now 6-4. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday but moved up two days due to a less-than-promising weather forecast. The two teams are still scheduled to play another twinbill on Sunday.

GAME 1 – Gannon 2, D'Youville 0
Sapp improved to 2-0 while tossing a complete-game five-hitter. The left-hander walked three and struck out six. The graduate student threw his second career shutout. He allowed just two runners to reach second base. The Saints had runners on first and third with two outs in the top of the fifth but Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) hauled in a line drive to center.

An inning later, Callahan made a spectacular diving catch in right centerfield to rob Ethan Hammond of extra bases with a runner on base. D'Youville looked to rally in the top of the seventh with a single and walk, but Sapp induced a foul out to first base to complete his gem.

Gannon finished with seven hits. The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) led off the inning with a triple to right center. He would score on a nice piece of baserunning. With the infield in, Rea hit a ground ball to second. When the second baseman threw over to first, Zeroski took off for home and slid into home ahead of the throw from the first baseman.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) singled and moved up on a wild pitch. He scored when Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) continued his hot-hitting with a double to centerfield. It was the 15th RBI for the thirdbaseman, who went 3-for-3 in the game with a double, two singles and two stolen bases. It was already sixth game with double-figure hits.

Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) went 2-for-3 with a double.

GAME 2 – Gannon 9, D'Youville 4
The Golden Knights received another strong pitching performance from starter Jacob Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity), who scattered seven hits over 5.1 innings. The redshirt junior lefthander picked up his first win of the season, walking one and matching his career high with seven strikeouts.

The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Vega walked, stole second and scored on Zeroski's single to right center.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the bottom of the third on a pair of unearned runs as Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) drove in Rea and Kalbfus with a triple to right field. After the Saints closed to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fourth, Gannon answered with its own run in the bottom of the frame. Callahan walked with two outs, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Rea roped a double to right center.

Gannon broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Gagnon double and stole third. He scored on Hess' sacrifice fly. They would push across three more runs with two outs. Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) reached on a single, followed by a walk for Alex Baldi (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep). Callahan plated one with a double to right field, and Baldi and Callahan came across on a throwing error.

Kalbfus scored Gannon's ninth run in the bottom of the sixth, reaching on a walk and scoring on a Gagnon double. D'Youville would score three unearned runs in the top of the seventh.

Gannon ended the second game with eight hits. Gagnon was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. He added a pair of stolen bases as the Golden Knights stole four bases.
