Vega, Wetherholt Blast Home Runs in Sunday's 8-0 Win Over D'Youville

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon baseball wrapped up a sweep of its three-game series against D'Youville College with an 8-0 shutout win on Sunday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium in Erie. Gannon scored four run in the first inning and never looked back in the pull-away victory.
 
Gannon opened the three-game series with the Saints by picking up a doubleheader sweep on Thursday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. The Knights took game one of the series by a 2-0 final, before winning Thursday's second game by a 9-4 margin.
 
Sunday's win was Gannon's fifth in a row as the Knights improved to 8-3 on the season. D'Youville is now 6-6 on the young season.
 
Gannon broke open the game in the bottom of the first inning by scoring four runs in the opening frame. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) got the scoring started for the Knights by hitting a solo home run to center field for the early 1-0 advantage. Later in the inning with runners on second and third, Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) cleared the bases with an RBI single to right field.
 
Later in the inning with Mejia on third, Gannon's Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) hit a sacrifice fly to right field that made the score 4-0.
 
Mejia once again crossed home plate in the bottom of the third inning following a throwing error by the catcher to push Gannon' lead to 5-0. One inning later, Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) made it 6-0 with an RBI single into the third base gap that allowed Vega to safely reach home from third.

Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) added the explanation mark for the Knights with a two-run home run to right field that made the Gannon advantage 8-0 after five innings.
 
At the plate, Vega went 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Mejia also batted 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two runs batted-in.
 
The Knights finished the game with six stolen bases, including two apiece from Vega and Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside).
 
On the hill, Gannon had five pitchers combine for a nine-inning shutout victory. Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) made the start and went three scoreless innings before Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) came in to work the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Judy improved to 2-0 on the season and finished the day by allowing just two hits and striking out five.
 
Gannon will now prepare for PSAC play on Friday at California (Pa.). The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa.
