ERIE, Pa. – For the second straight dual meet, the Gannon University women's swimming and diving team put up a fantastic fight and kept it close with Indiana (Pa.) all meet long before eventually falling 154-139 in the team score.
The women were once again propelled by event wins from
Sterre van de Goor (Oss, Netherlands/Sint-Joriscollege) (in the 500 and 1000 freestyle) as well as
Hannah Jacobs (Johannesburg, South Africa) in the 100 individual medley. The team also added a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.14) from
Gabriela McAllister (Waterford, Pa.),
Irati Arzalluz (Lasarte-Oria, Spain/Santo Tomas Lizeoa),
Alex Pannemann (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley), and
Lily Cunningham (Lavista, Neb./Papillion-La Vista).
In the diving portion of the meet, contested only on the one-meter boards,
Kyla Miller (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) had an incredible day—finishing second in the six-dive portion to IUP's Allison Brownlee with 207.15 and in first place in the five-dive session with a score of 184.13 to best Brownlee's 176.10. Miller ended up .2 away in degree of difficulty from NCAA qualification.
Other Gannon divers competing in the first one-meter session included
Alexandra Briggs (Newark, N.Y./Newark Senior High) (third place with a total of 162.45),
Nicole Spiegel (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) (fourth, 146.65), and
Madeline Kless (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) (a non-team score tallying 148.35.)
The Golden Knights' depth once again proved to be a strength, as the team finished 1-2 in the 1000 free (van de Goor in 10:48.39 and
Chenay Date Line (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College Sandton) in second with a 10:56.98, both PSAC qualifying times) and 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle (van de Goor's 5:15.88 followed by
Madalyn Myers' (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) 5:19.55 and
Hailey Yurkovich's (Elizabeth, Pa.) 5:27.50, also all PSAC cuts.) The freshman pair of Jacobs and
Isabella Dietz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also finished 1-2 in the 100 IM, with Jacobs' 1:01.72 edging out Dietz' 1:01.97.
Three pool records were set in the dual by IUP swimmers: 1:47.71 in the 200 medley relay, Paige Mikesell's 56.78 in the 100 butterfly, and Rachel Johnson's 1:04.92 in the 100 breaststroke.

The Golden Knights have earned the rest of the year off and return to the pool in 2023 with a home dual meet on Friday, Jan. 20 versus Edinboro.
