Miller, van de Goor excel but Knights fall to RIT, 154-146

Kyla Miller won three-meter diving while Sterre van de Goor took first in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Gannon University women's swimming and diving team won six events—including a pair by junior Sterre van de Goor (Oss, Netherlands/Sint-Joriscollege)—and notched nine runner-up finishes but could not catch a solid RIT team and lost Saturday's dual meet by just eight points, 154-146.

Van de Goor touched the wall first in both distance freestyle events (the 1000 free in 10:48.91 and the 500 free in 5:15.96, ahead of teammates Madalyn Myers (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Chenay Date Line (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College Sandton), as the Golden Knights finished 1-2-3 in that event.) Myers also finished second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:56.57.

The other standout performance of the day came from Kyla Miller (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) in the diving portion of the meet, claiming victory in the three-meter event with a total of 216.90, besting RIT's Kay Oliver's 213.95. Other Golden Knight divers in the event included Alexandra Briggs' (Newark, N.Y./Newark Senior High) third-place total of 172.45 and Nicole Spiegel's (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) fifth-place mark of 147.05.

Miller also performed well on the one-meter boards, with a runner-up finish of 216.55. Briggs took fourth place with a 169.55, Spiegel claimed fifth with a 162.80. and Madeline Kless (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) notched a total of 156.90.

Other Gannon victories on the day included a 1-2 photo finish in the 200 freestyle from Date Line (first place in 1:59.27) and Irati Arzalluz (Lasarte-Oria, Spain/Santo Tomas Lizeoa) in second (1:59.39, just 12 hundredths of a second behind.) Francesca Nemetz (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) was the winner in the 200 fly (2:14.09) and freshman Hannah Jacobs (Johannesburg, South Africa) made her dual meet debut with a victory in the 100 fly (time of 59.44.)

The Golden Knights' depth allowed them to keep pace with RIT, exemplified in events like the 50 freestyle, with a 2-3-4 finish from Alex Pannemann (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) (25.54), Lily Cunningham (Lavista, Neb./Papillion-La Vista) (25.60), and Lexi Mills (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) (25.94.)
