Men's cross country finishes eighth at 2022 PSAC Championships

Caleb Mandel led the Golden Knights with a 13th-place finish and All-PSAC First Team Honors

MANSFIELD, Pa. –  Gannon University senior Caleb Mandel (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) continued his streak of top-15 finishes in every race he has competed in during the 2022 season, finishing in 13th place at Saturday's 2022 PSAC Cross Country Championships to earn All-PSAC First Team honors for the first time in his career. Mandel, who completed the 8k course at Mansfield University in 25:50.8, had previously been accorded All-PSAC Second Team honors after his 25th-place finish in the 2020 PSAC Championships.
 
The Golden Knights as a team finished eighth of 16 total institutions at the event with 226 total points, just behind seventh-place Kutztown (201 points) and sixth-place IUP (200.) Gannon sophomore Ely Personius (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) just missed out on All-PSAC honors (given to runners in the top 30) with a 33rd-place finish in 26:32.9, improving on his 44th-place mark from last year's PSAC Championships. Sophomore Gavyn Hansotte (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) also ran better than he did a year ago, crossing the finish line in 27:17.9 (57th place) to improve on his 95th-place finish from 2021. Alex Chelton (Oil City, Pa./Cathedral Prep) also followed suit with a much-improved race from last year, with his 70th-place time of 27:35.8 bettering his 94th-place run from last season. Rounding out the Golden Knight contingent in the top-100 was freshman Luke Malena (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf), who made his PSAC Championship debut with a solid 68th-place finish in 27:33.4.
 
Edinboro senior Ward Ries was the overall race winner with a time of 25:05.0 and the Fighting Scots claimed three of the top four spots, with Connor Volk-Klos (25:07.4) in second and Eric Alu (25:21.2) in fourth place. Cal U freshman Jonathan Thrush (25:14.2, third place) and Slippery Rock junior Troy Hart (25:23.2, fifth) rounded out the top five.
 
Edinboro also finished atop the team standings with 33 points, ahead of second-place Shippensburg (55 points), Slippery Rock (86, third place), Cal U (110, fourth), and Lock Haven (180) as the top five institutions.
