Gannon Finishes 15th at NCAA Div. II Atlantic Regional

Personius first Golden Knight across the finish line

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Gannon men's cross country team finished 15th at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday morning at Mansfield, Pa. A total of 23 teams and 162 runners took part in sunny but very cold conditions at Lamb's Creek Cross Country Course.

The area was spared the snow that has fallen the past few days in the Great Lakes area. However, muddy conditions forced race officials to shorten the race to 9.5K from the original 10K distance.

Charleston (WV) posted the upset in the team race, edging Edinboro 36 points to 45. Concord was third with 103 points. Davis & Elkins (128 pts.) and Shippensburg (134) rounded out the top five. Gannon totaled 385 points.

Charleston finished with three of the top five finishers, but it was Concord's Isaac Prather to break out of the pack late to post a time of winning time of 29:25.0 over the extended 9.5 distance. Thomas Temote of Charleston was second (29:28.4) and teammate Alejandro Abellaneda was third (29:29.8).

Gannon's top finisher was Ely Personius (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central), The sophomore crossed the finish line in 44th place with a time of 30:48.6.He moved up from 50th place in last year's race.

Caleb Mandel (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek), a senior who was Gannon's top runner all year, was next with a time of 31:25.5. Two other Golden Knights placed in the top 100 runners, with freshman Luke Malena (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf) 94th (32:33.6) and sophomore Gavyn Hansotte (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) 99th (32:47.8).
