ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's water polo team will wrap up the 2022 season competing this weekend in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Championships. A total of 11 teams are competing in the three-day tournament which runs from Friday, November 18 to Sunday, November 20 in the Bronx, N.Y. Fordham is hosting the championships at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.

In addition to Gannon, the field includes Bucknell, Fordham, George Washington, Johns Hopkins, McKendree, Mercyhurst, Mount St. Mary's, Navy, Salem, and Wagner. Fordham and George Washington are tied for 19th in the latest Men's Varsity Top 20. Johns Hopkins is ranked eighth in Division III.

The Golden Knights will look to extend a two-game winning streak when they face a familiar foe in McKendree (6-17) in their first match at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. The two have split a pair of intense matches this year. Gannon won the first meeting 13-12 at the CWPA Div. II Conference Championship, and two weeks later McKendree came away with a 14-10 win at the CWPA Weekend. The winner of the Gannon-McKendree contest moves on to face Fordham (23-7) later in the day.

Head coach Shane Unger's team has been through an up-and-down season and has a deceiving 8-15 record. They have played a difficult schedule and also had the misfortune of playing without a pair of key performers lately.

"We had a tough finish to the regular schedule after losing a couple of key players, but look to come out strong against McKendree," he pointed out. "I am hoping to finish the season with a strong run at this tournament."

Gannon comes off a 17-11 win over Penn State Behrend last Saturday. Eight different players scored, with Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) leading the way with four goals. Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va./Huron) had three goals and three assists while Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) contributed three goals and two assists.

The Golden Knights will once again be without leading scorer Alex Kotskar (Voula, Greece), who has missed the last four matches but still leads the team with 70 goals and 93 points.

Marjanovic Wrapping Up Brilliant Career
Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) is second in scoring with 84 points on 42 goals and a team-high 42 assists. The senior from Serbia became the fifth Golden Knight with 100 goals and 100 assists against Behrend. He now shows 178 career goals and 101 career assists.

He ranks fourth in career goals and seventh in career assists. Marjanovic scored a team-high 63 goals in 2019 and again led the team in 2021 with 51 goals. He is a two-time ACWPC All-American, earning first team honors in 2019 and honorable mention in 2021.

Three Golden Knights Named to CWPA Championship All-Tournament Team
The CWPA Division II Championship All-Tournament Team featured three Golden Knights. Seniors Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) and Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) and freshman Alex Kotskar (Voula, Greece) earned All-Tournament spots. Marjanovic contributed five goals and 11 assists, with Kotskar leading Gannon with 10 goals plus four assists, and Mickic with eight goals.

Kaverman Enjoying Best Season
Senior Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) has emerged as one of Gannon's top scorers this season. Kaverman is second on the team in goals with 45 goals and assists with 31 for 76 points. Both figures easily exceed his top season total. He now has 70 career goals and 52 career assists.

Hollo Comes Up Big vs. the Lakers
Senior Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) has turned in many outstanding efforts between the pipes during his career. He came up with one of his best recently against Mercyhurst, allowing just two goals to get past him while registering 15 saves. That was followed by a 13-save effort vs. Behrend. He owns a 13.70 GAA.

Fribourg, Mickic Also Strong Scorers
Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) has contributed 37 goals and 24 assists this season for 61 points, while Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) has enjoyed another strong season as a senior. The native of Serbia has 42 goals and two assists for 44 points, boosting his career goals total to 96.
