Gannon Wraps Up Play in Morgantown Crossover Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Gannon men's water polo team faced a pair of tough teams on Sunday while competing in the second day of the Morgantown Crossover Classic and struggled to get a consistent attack going. The result was an 18-9 loss to No. 18 Fordham and a 17-8 setback to Wagner. An extremely difficult schedule to date leaves Gannon at 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference.

The Golden Knights return to action next weekend in the Harvard Invitational. They open with a match against Brown at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15 followed by a 3:00 p.m. contest against Penn State Behrend. On Sunday, October 16 Gannon faces Connecticut College at 9:00 a.m. and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 1:00 p.m.

No. 18 Fordham 18, Gannon 9
Earlier in the season a short-handed Gannon team suffered a 28-8 loss to the Rams. With several key players available this time around the Golden Knights were much more competitive but still came up short against the 18th-ranked Rams. Fordham held a 28-10 advantage in shots and was able to pull away thanks to a dominant second quarter. Gannon trailed just 5-3 after one period as late goals by Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va./Huron) and Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) pulled the Golden Knights to within two goals. But the Rams outscored Gannon 9-2 over the next eight minutes to take a 14-5 lead at the half. They opened the third quarter with two more goals for a 16-5 advantage. Alex Kotskar (Voula, Greece) had two goals and an assist with Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va./Huron) also scoring twice. Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) had eight saves in goal.

Wagner 17, Gannon 8
The scenario was somewhat similar in the second match of the day against Wagner. The two teams were tied at 4-4 after one period, but the Gannon offense suffered through several extended periods without a goal. The Seahawks outscored Gannon 6-1 in the second period to go up 10-5. A low-scoring third quarter saw Gannon pull to within 11-7 thanks to goals from Alex Kotskar (Voula, Greece) and Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)), but Wagner scored the first five goals of the final period. Kotskar had three goals and an assist while Marjanovic also scored three times. Marjanovic is now seventh in career goals with 154 and moved into a tie for 12th place in assists with 76. Wagner held a 38-8 advantage in shots with Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) in goal for Gannon and recording 13 saves.
