Kotskar Scores Six Goals as Gannon Falls in Overtime to Navy 15-12

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Gannon men's water polo team fell just shy of upsetting Navy, finally succumbing to the Midshipmen 15-12 in overtime. The Golden Knights were playing the first of three contests in the Morgantown Crossover Weekend. Gannon is now 2-8 and dropped to 1-4 in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference. Navy ended the day with an 8-8 record.  

The tight match saw Gannon jump out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter as Alex Kotskar (Voula, Greece) and Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) each had a goal and an assist. Navy came back to knot the score at 5-5 at the half. Gannon grabbed a 5-2 lead before Navy knotted the score. Kotskar accounted for both of Gannon's goals in the period.

Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter, the first three by Gannon and the last three by Navy. The Midshipmen went ahead 9-8 early in the final quarter, but Gannon scored four straight goals, with Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finding the back of the net on one and assisting on two others. Unfortunately, Navy would score three times in the final minutes as the match went into overtime tied at 12-12.

Navy controlled the six-minute overtime, scoring three times in the first three minutes. Michael Heller, who led Navy with six goals, scored at the 2:29 mark and Navy led the rest of the way.

Kotskar, a freshman from Greece, matched his season-high with six goals and added an assist. Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) contributed a pair of goals.

Navy held a 33-19 advantage in shots, but the Golden Knights owned a .632 shooting percentage, Both teams struggled on the power play, with Gannon 1-of-9 and Navy 1-of-11. Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) had 17 saves in goal for Gannon.

The Golden Knights have a pair of games on Sunday. The day begins with a 9:00 a.m. match vs. No. 18 Fordham and concludes with a 2:20 game vs. Wagner.
