Marjanovic Continues Record-Book Climb as Gannon Splits Pair of Matches on Day Two at Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Gannon men's water polo team split a pair of matches on Sunday in the second day of the Harvard Invitational and will head into next weekend's CWPA Division II Championships with a 4-12 record. The Golden Knights easily disposed of Division III No. 8 Connecticut College, 17-4, before Massachusetts Institute of Technology pulled away for a 17-10 win over Gannon.  

Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) continued his climb up the record charts over the four-game weekend, finishing with eight goals and eight assists. He moved into fifth place in career goals with 162 and into tenth place in career assists with 82.

Gannon now readies to host the CWPA Division II Championship at Cathedral Prep's Hallman Aquatics Center. The Golden Knights host Mercyhurst on Friday, October 21 at 7 p.m., celebrating Senior Night. On Saturday, October 22 Gannon meets McKendree at 7:40 p.m., and on Sunday, October 23 the Golden Knights wrap up the championships at 2:40 p.m. vs. Salem. Gannon is in search of its fifth straight CWPA crown.

Gannon 17, Connecticut College 4

Gannon jumped out to a fast 7-0 after one quarter one the No.8 Division III team behind Alex Kotskar (Voula, Greece) and Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) Kotskar scored four goals and Kaverman added two. The lead grew to 11-1 at the half as Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) scored twice in the second quarter and Kotskar and Matthew Harkrader each scored a goal. Connecticut scored the first two goals of the third quarter to close to 11-3, but the Golden Knights recovered to build the lead back to 14-4 after three periods as Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), Kaverman, and Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va./Huron) scored third-quarter goals. Gannon ended with a narrow 26-25 edge in shots and owned a .654 shooting percentage while the Camels came in at .160. Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded 11 saves in goal. Kotskar ended the morning with five goals and four assists while Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) also scored four goals. MIT 17, Gannon 10

Gannon battled MIT on even terms in the first half but the Engineers dominated play in the second half. A back-and-forth first quarter saw MIT grab a 4-3 lead after eight minutes. MIT also outscored the Golden Knights 4-3 in the second quarter to take an 8-6 lead into halftime. The first half featured five ties and four lead changes. Gannon scored four times on power plays and once on a penalty shot. Gannon scored the first two goals of the second quarter to go up 5-4, but the Engineers took the lead for good with the next four goals. Gannon closed to 8-7 on Vlad Mickic's (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) second goal, assisted by Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)), but MIT went on another four-goal run. The third quarter ended with MIT holding a 13-9 lead. The two teams split goals to start the final eight minutes, but MIT scored the final three goals. MIT held a 40-35 advantage in shots, with Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) recording 17 saves in goal. Gannon was 6-of-7 on power plays.
