Del Castillo tallies 20th goal of season, Knights draw 1-1 with Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – For the second time during the 2022 season, Gannon University men's soccer battled to a draw with Seton Hill University, ending Saturday's contest 1-1 to remain tied with the Griffins in second place in the PSAC West Division standings. Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) put the Knights in front in the third minute with his Division II-leading 20th goal of the season but Seton Hill equalized on a wacky play in the 31st minute to make the match 1-1. After a scoreless second half, Gannon's overall record now moves to 10-3-2 (4-1-2 PSAC West) while the Griffins move to 6-7-2 (4-1-2 PSAC West.)

Del Castillo's goal came from excellent build-up play from the Golden Knights' midfield. Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) weighted a great ball down the right wing to release Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena), who spotted Sergio slicing into the box and delivered the on-target cross. Del Castillo redirected it past Griffins keeper Bobby White and is now sixth all-time on Gannon's all-time goalscoring list with 49 career goals. The 20 goal total is also the sixth-most ever scored by a Golden Knight in a season and just seven behind Gannon's all-time record of 27 from Gerry van DeMerwe in the 1985 season.

In the 31st minute, Seton Hill seemed to replicate Gannon's goal-scoring sequence, with Archie Lock sending a ball down the right side to Elias Vangen, who crossed a dangerous ball in front of goal. Gannon keeper Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) got his hands on it and knocked it down before scooping it up, but the referee judged that the ball bounced over the goal line completely, tallying the goal for Seton Hill.

For the match, Seton Hill held advantages in shots (16 to nine), shots on goal (five to three), and corner kicks (six to three.) Including this year's pair of draws, Gannon and Seton Hill have played each other extremely close in the last few meetings, including a trio of one-goal Golden Knights victories from the 2021 season. Gannon defeated the Griffins 2-1 (2OT) and 1-0 in the 2021 regular season and then 2-1 in the 2021 PSAC tournament.

Gannon has seven days to recover before its next match, another road contest at California (Pa.) on Saturday, Oct 22 at 2:30 p.m. The Knights bested the Vulcans 7-1 in this season's previous meeting back on Oct. 1.
