Men's Soccer Clinches PSAC Tournament Berth with 2-0 Win at California (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team came away with a hard-earned 2-0 win at California (Pa.) on Saturday to clinch a spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. The Golden Knights improved to 11-3-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the PSAC West while Cal is now 3-10-1 and 1-7-0, respectively.

Next up for the Golden Knights is a rematch with a Mercyhurst team that leads the PSAC West and has vaulted to second in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25. The Lakers have also clinched a playoff berth and improved to 16-0-1 with a 10-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday. The two meet on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. on the Mercyhurst campus. The Lakers claimed a 4-0 decision in the first meeting.

Gannon defeated California (Pa.) 7-1 in the first meeting on October 1 at McConnell Family Stadium. Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) scored five goals in that match.

The Vulcans held Del Castillo without a goal and just two shots and were within a bounce of a tie at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility before an insurance goal in the final minute. Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) opened the scoring at the 39:07 mark, assisted by Charlie Petersen (Erie, Pa./McDowell). The freshman from Norway scored his fifth goal of the season as he found the back of the net with a shot into the bottom right corner after taking a pass in the box.

The score remained that way until the final seconds when Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway at 89:42.

Gannon held a 10-5 advantage in shots, including 5-3 in shots on goal. The Golden Knights led 6-3 in corner kicks.

Freshman Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) once again started in goal and recorded three saves for his third shutout since taking over in goals seven games ago.
