Men's Water Polo Wraps Up Weekend at Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Gannon University men's water polo team wrapped up action in the Bruno Classic with a pair of contests on Saturday. The Golden Knights lost to Santa Clara, 20-7, in their opening contest before a 17-10 setback to host Brown University in the nightcap.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, September 11 against Mount St. Mary's at the Hallman Aquatic Center at Cathedral Prep.

SANTA CLARA 20, GANNON 7
Five players contributed goals for the Golden Knights, with Tony Squegila (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) and Robert Bolmanski (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) (Fairview, Pa. / McDowell) scoring two goals apiece. Grant Simeone (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) (Westerville, Ohio / Thomas Washington), Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) (Cincinnati, Ohio /Sycamore) and Thomas Koelling (St. Louis, Mo.) (St. Louis, Mo.) added a goal each. Santa Clara jumped out to a 5-3 lead after one quarter, and held a 10-5 lead at the half. They would outscore Gannon, 7-1, in the third quarter.

BROWN 17, GANNON 10  
Brown broke open a tight match at halftime by outscoring the Golden Knights, 11-2, in the second half. Gannon jumped out to a 6-3 lead after one period, and the two teams were tied at 8-8 at halftime. Vladimir Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) (Subotica, Serbia) scored a pair of goals as Gannon led 4-1 in the early going. Squeglia's goal with one second remaining gave Gannon a 6-3 lead after one quarter. Brown would knot the score at 6-6 with 4:31 left in the half, before Mickic and Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) ()Belgrade, Serbia) scored goals to give the Golden Knights an 8-6 lead at the half. Brown opened the third quarter with four straight goals to take the lead at 10-8. Marjanovic closed the gap to 10-9 with a goal at the 4:44 mark. However, Brown would pull away, scoring the next five goals. Marjanovic and Mickic led Gannon with three goals apiece. Tim Baer (Oceanside, Calif./Classical Academy) (Oceanside, Calif. / Classical Academy) added a pair of goals, and Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va.) (Richmond, Va.) and Squeglia had one goal each.
