Men's Water Polo Splits Pair of Contests on Opening Day of Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Gannon University men's water polo team split a pair of contests on the opening day of the Bruno Classic, hosted by Brown University. The Golden Knights rallied for a 17-12 win over Austin College in their 2021 season opener, then suffered an 11-7 loss to St. Francis(NY). The Golden Knights will play two more games on Sunday. They play Santa Clara at 12:15 p.m., followed by a 3:30 p.m. meeting against host Brown.

GANNON 17, AUSTIN COLLEGE 12
Eight different players scored goals, led by Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) (Belgrade, Serbia / North Allegheny) with four, and Gannon dominated play in the second half to post the season-opening win. The Golden Knights were down 4-1 following an Austin goal with 4:23 left in the first quarter, but the period would end in a 5-5. Gannon actually scored four straight goals to take a 5-4 lead. Robert Bolmanski (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) (Fairview, Pa. / McDowell) scored with 1:10 left to give Gannon its first lead of the season, but Austin knotted the scores with two seconds left. The two teams would head to halftime tied at 8-8. Gannon would outscore Austin 4-2 in the third quarter and 5-2 in the fourth. The contest was still tied at 10-10 when Gannon scored six of the next seven goals. Marjanovic gave the Golden Knights the lead for good at 11-10, finding the back of the net with 40 seconds left in the period. Marty Kaverman (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) added a goal with just four seconds remaining for a 12-10 advantage after three quarters. Kaverman gave the Golden Knights a 13-10 advantage with 7:26 to play, and following an Austin goal, Marjanovic, Bolmanski, and Tony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) accounted for goals to give Gannon a 16-11 lead with 3:22 remaining. In addition to Marjanovic, Kaverman scored three goals, Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), Tim Baer (Oceanside, Calif./Classical Academy) (Oceanside, Calf. / Classical Academy), Vladimir Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) (Subotica, Serbia) and Bolmanski scored two apiece, and Dylan Schmitzerle (Richmond, Va.) and Squeglia scored once. Max Wade led Austin with five goals.

ST. FRANCIS(NY) 11, GANNON 7
Gannon trailed just 6-5 at the half, but St. Francis(NY) scored five goals in the third quarter while limiting the Golden Knights without a score.  Gannon would hold SFC scoreless in the fourth period, but was only able to score a pair of goals. Marjanovic led the Golden Knights with a pair of goals, while David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschool) (Arlington, Va.), Seth Johnson (Sugar Hill, Ga./Lanier) (Sugar Hill, Ga. / Lanier), Squeglia, Bolmanski, and Mickic scored one goal apiece. Gannon led just once at 1-0 on a goal by #7 at the 7:36 mark of the first period. Trailing 5-3 late in the second quarter, Gannon scored back-to-back goals by #18 (3:38) and #8 (1:39) to knot the score at 5-5, but SFC ended the half with the lead goal with 20 seconds left by Paolo Morliere. Gannon would not score again until the 3:05 mark of the fourth quarter on a goal by Mickic.
