KEY SEQUENCE
  • Gannon was chipping away at the lead throughout the second half, scoring two goals around a single Slippery Rock goal a number of times to get it to 10-9 with just under 10 minutes to play, but the guests scored with five minutes to go and held on to escape Erie with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Slippery Rock got on the board first with a free position goal, but McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) evened it up for the Golden Knights five minutes in. The Rock answered with the ensuing draw control and a quick score to go back in front, and built a 4-1 lead by the 20:00 mark.
  • Woodworth got another chance a few minutes later, but was stopped by Rock goalie Gillian O'Rourke. The Knights got a pair of quick chances after Slippery Rock made it 5-1, but couldn't break through the goal, and an extended possession for the guests ended with another tally with just under eight minutes to go in the half to go up 6-1. Erin Renwick (Islip, N.Y./Islip) snagged a save on a free position shot with 10 seconds to go to keep it there at the break.
  • Woodworth got the action started quickly in the second half after Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) won the opening draw, getting off a shot that slipped just wide, then coming in from the left side to notch her second and make it 6-2 less than a minute in. Slippery Rock stretched it back out to a five-goal lead, but Woodworth again worked quickly, taking a slick dish from Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) and converting to cut it back to 7-3.
  • Brooke Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) forced a turnover on the defensive end to get the Knights moving the other way, and Hannah Mowery (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) made it count on a free position as the clock ticked past 23 minutes to play to bring it to 7-4. A follow-up shot on the next possession forced a save, and Jacobs and Skyler Parsons (Reading, Pa./Exeter Twp.) each put one on goal as well over the next few minutes.
  • A flurry of scoring saw the Rock get back out to a four-goal lead, only to have Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) find the back of the net on a free position and Woodworth make quick work of the next possession to cut it back to two at 8-6. Slippery Rock grabbed the next draw and got right down the field to bump it back to a three-goal edge, but Renwick grabbed a save on the next Rock possession, leading to a Maddie Krock (Granville, Ohio/Granville) finish to get it back to 9-7.
  • After another Rock goal with 12 minutes to go, Alexandra Kehrig (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) forced a turnover, leading to another Woodworth goal a minute later. Another caused turnover, this time by Hayley Latvala (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), led to Woodworth finding Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and the Golden Knights cutting it back to a one-goal game for the first time since it was 2-1 early in the first half.
  • The Rock got the final score of the game with 5:01 to play, and successfully played keep-away the rest of the game, as neither team got a shot off in the final five minutes and the visitors were able to hold on against the Gannon comeback.

GAME NOTES
  • Tuesday was Senior Day for the Golden Knights, as Latvala, Krock, Renwick and Julia Strtak (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) were honored prior to the game.
  • Gannon put up a second-half performance reminiscent of the last time the two teams played at McConnell Family Stadium in 2019, when the Golden Knights trailed Slippery Rock 7-1 at the half only to charge back for eight second-half goals and a 9-8 victory.
  • Renwick matched her career high with seven ground balls. That mark is a season high for the Golden Knights. The senior also posted 13 saves, and has now turned in double-digit saves in five of her last six games.
  • Woodworth continues have a scoring touch, tallying five more goals Tuesday to bump her season total to 34. That continues to lead the team and places the freshman in a tie for second in the PSAC.
  • Gannon forced 10 turnovers, with B. Hepditch leading the way with three and Latvala and M. Hepditch each adding two. The Golden Knights have at least 10 caused turnovers in three of their past four games.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon enters its final week of the season with two more home games yet to play, beginning Sunday with a test against No. 22 Seton Hill.
  • The 1 p.m. first draw from McConnell Family Stadium will feature live stats and live video.
