  • The Short Story: Head coach Cleve Wright earned his 300th career win after No. 20/25 Gannon topped Bluefield State, 55-43, on Sunday afternoon at Hammermill Center. Sydney Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) paced the Golden Knights with a team-high 12 points, while Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) added in 11 points and a career-best six assists.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bluefield State started out fast running out to a 10-3 advantage following a Ameera McClain jumper. Pirosko answered for Gannon down low after Delaney Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) found her for the layup, 10-5, at the 4:59 mark. Both teams then struggled to hit a shot the rest of the way as Gannon trailed after one, 12-8.
  • The Knights came out firing in the second frame with seven straight points to capture the lead, 15-12, after Emma Wright (Erie, Pa./Talawanda) drained a triple. Following a Bluefield State three pointer to lock the contest, 15-15, McKel Nation (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and Margo Loutzenhiser (Russell, Pa./Warren Area) each knocked down a three pointer for the Knights to push their edge up to six, 21-51, with 3:52 to play in the half. Gannon led at the intermission, 25-20. Wright and Nation each chipped in six points, while Dogan grabbed a team-best six rebounds to pace the Knights at the break.
  • Both teams opened the second half exchanging buckets until Bluefield State regained the lead, 30-29, after Ashlie Louden netted a three pointer. Gannon retaliated with eight straight points to steal the edge, 37-30, following a Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) three pointer at the 1:22 mark. Gannon led after three quarters of play, 39-33.
  • Gannon began the final frame extending its lead up to nine, 44-35, after Loutzenhiser found Pirosko on the perimeter with 7:58 on the clock. Big Blue made one final surge constructing a 6-2 run to pull back within five, 46-41, following a layup from Londen Colemen. Gannon went on to close out the contest from the free throw line connecting on seven attempts to seal the 55-43 win.
GAME NOTES
  • With the win, head coach Cleve Wright earned his 300th career win. He has compiled a 300-194 overall record over 16 seasons.
  • Gannon shot 43.6 percent (17-39) from the field and 40.0 percent (8-20) from three. The Knights also shot 92.9 percent (13-14) from the free throw line.
  • Gannon notched a season-high six blocked shots.
  • The Knights hauled in 29 rebounds, including 24 on the defensive end.
  • Mitchell paced Gannon with a team-high 12 points. It marked her sixth double digit scoring performance of the season. She also added a season-high three blocks with three steals, two assists and one rebound to her stat line.
  • Pirosko logged her sixth straight double digit scoring performance with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. She also set career-highs in assists (6) and blocks (3).
  • Dogan led Gannon down low collecting a career-best seven rebounds. She also tallied four points with two assists and one steal.
