Gannon Records Best-Ever Sixth Place Showing at Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite a 9-7 loss to fourth seed Bucknell on Sunday morning at Lejeune Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy, it was a successful weekend for the Gannon men's water polo team at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Championship.

The Golden Knights came in seeded seventh in the eight-team tournament, and had never won a game in the first two days in the tournament. Gannon previously qualified in 2017 and 2019, finishing seventh both time. On Saturday, GU upset sixth seed Johns Hopkins to qualify for Sunday's fifth place game. Head coach Shane Unger's squad recorded its best finish ever, coming in sixth and ending the year with a 14-10 record.

The defensive affair saw Bucknell take a 3-2 lead after one quarter. The Bison opened the scoring at the four-minute mark, but Tim Baer (Oceanside, Calif./Classical Academy) scored just 17 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1. Bucknell would tack on two more goals, but Baer found the back of the cage with just under two minutes left for the 3-2 advantage.

Bucknell would account for the lone goal of the second quarter, and that did not come until 36 seconds remained. The Bison built their lead to 6-2 with the first two goals of the third quarter, but Gannon came back with a pair of goals 16 seconds apart to trim the deficit to 6-4. Robert Bolmanski (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) scored the first at the 3:23 mark, and Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) accounted for the second at 3:07 remaining in the period.

The Bison built the lead to 8-5 after three quarters, with Vlad Mickic's (Subotica, Serbia /Nikola Tesla) goal sandwiched between a pair of BU goals.

Gannon pulled to with a goal late in the fourth stanza. Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) scored at 5:07, and Hamp made it a one goal game at 8-7 with 2:59 remaining. Eighteen seconds later, Bucknell added an insurance goal.

Hamp was the lone Golden Knight with multiple goals, scoring twice. Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) were in goal. Marco played the first three quarters and had four saves. Hollo matched that total while playing the final eight minutes.

Shay Gillearn paced Bucknell with three goals. Adrien Touzot was in goal for the Bison and totaled 10 saves.
