Kubagawa sets school record in 200 IM at Day 1 of 2021 Magnus Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Freshman Hiyan Kubagawa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) put together a historic race in the "B" final of the 200 IM at Cleveland State's Magnus Cup, zooming to the wall in a time of 1:52.19—a new Gannon school record—and a time that would have given him a sixth-place finish in the "A" final. Kubagawa's new time bests Chris Luus' (Pretoria, South Africa/Hoerskool Garsfontein) 1:52.99 from the 2020-21 season.

The Gannon University men's swimming team as a whole wrapped up Day 1 of the Magnus Cup with multiple other solid performances in the pool, all while competing against multiple Division I programs. The men finished Day 1 in fourth place in the team standings with 241 points, 31 behind third-place Case Western Reserve University. Host Cleveland State leads the men's standings.

Men's Highlights
  • The Gannon quartet of Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys'), Connor Hebert (Damascus, Md./Damascus), Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum), and Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) swam an incredible race in the 200 yard freestyle relay, finishing third with a time of 1:22.76, just 1.56 seconds shy of an NCAA qualifying time.
  • McCallum had a busy day in the pool, adding a ninth-place finish in the 500 freestyle "A" final (4:38.73) as well as touching the wall seventh in the "A" final of the 50 freestyle (21.11.)
  • Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) was even faster than McCallum in the 50 free "A" final with a 20.91, good for a fifth-place finish. Elsewhere in the 50 free "B" final: Hebert wins the race with a time of 21.18 while Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) finishes 10th in 22.13. Kirk Klemm (Cape Coral, Fla.) won the "C" final in 21.65 to complete a solid day of sprinting.
