Men's Water Polo Shuts Down Mercyhurst Before Losing to McKendree

O'FALLON, Ill. – The Gannon University men's water polo team split a pair of games on the first day of the CWPA Weekend hosted by McKendree University. Playing at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex, the Golden Knights played a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference contests. They opened with an 8-1 win over Mercyhurst before seeing their five-game winning streak snapped with an 11-8 loss to host McKendree.

Gannon will take a 6-4 record into a Sunday non-conference contest vs. Salem at 9:00 a.m. Gannon defeated Salem 18-15 two weeks ago.

GANNON 8, MERCYHURST 1
The Golden Knights made it five straight wins with the victory over local rival Mercyhurst. It also marked the 14th straight victory over the Lakers. The low-scoring affair saw Tim Baer (Oceanside, Calif./Classical Academy) open the scoring for Gannon following a steal by Tony Aqueglia. Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) gave the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead with his 22nd goal of the season at the 4:56 mark of the first period. The lead would grow to 3-0 as Marjanovic scored his second goal of the contest with just four seconds remaining in the period. Both teams would score once in the second period. Baer found the back of the cage off a pass from Squeglia for a 4-0 lead at 7:40 of the second period. Mercyhurst would score its lone goal of the morning on a penalty shot just moments later, and the half ended with Gannon leading 4-1. Gannon's lead grew to 5-1 with 1:35 left in the third period on a penalty shot by Squeglia. The Golden Knights would add on three late goals for the final margin. Squeglia's second goal on the power play made it 6-1 with 3:12 to play. Grant Simeone (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) would score twice in the final minute. Gannon finished with 29 shots compared to 28 for Mercyhurst. Baer, Squeglia, Marjanovic and Simeone each scored twice for pace the Gannon attack. Freshman Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) came up with 14 saves in the net for the Golden Knights.

McKENDREE 11, GANNON 8
The Bearcats avenged a 15-10 loss to Gannon two weeks ago thanks to three late goals. Gannon would score first, but McKendree tallied the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead after one period. Gannon would close to 4-3 but the Bearcats scored a goal as the half ended for a 5-3 advantage. The two teams would enter the final eight minutes tied at 7-7. McKendree edged ahead before the Golden Knights scored to tie the contest at 8-8. McKendree would score the final three goals to end Gannon's win streak at five games. NOTE:  Statistics were not available following the McKendree game.
