SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 17
th-ranked Gannon men's soccer team won its fourth-straight game and improved to 8-1 on the season with a 1-0 win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon at James Egli Field.
Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) set up
Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) for the game-winning goal in the 82
nd minute.
The goal was Knox's first of the season and 11
th of his GU career. Aanberg recorded his team-leading fourth assists of the season on the goal.
Statistically, the game was evenly matched throughout, with Gannon holding a 13-11 edge in total shots. Both teams recorded five shots-on-goal. Slippery Rock held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Fifteen minutes prior to the game-winning goal,
Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) had an earlier scoring opportunity for the Golden Knights, when he was awarded a penalty kick in the 68
th minute. The shot went left and hit the post, keeping the game scoreless.
The shutout victory was Gannon's fourth of the season, and its third in the last four game. GU goalkeeper
Maximiliano Rocco (Florence, S.C.) turned away all four of the on-target shots that he faces on Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to Knox's goal and Del Castillo's penalty kick,
Furkan Yildirim (Berlin, Germany/Thomas Mann Gymnasium) had two shots on goal, while Aanberg and
Peter Wagner (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) also had on-target shots for Gannon.
Anthony Gagliardi and Samuel Hillman both had two on-target shots for Slippery Rock on the offensive end of the field.
After five-consecutive road games, Gannon will finally return home to host Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday night at McConnell Family Stadium. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The first 200 fans at Saturday's game will receive a coupon for free Moe's chips and queso.
