ERIE, Pa. – For the fourth time in five matches, the No. 17-ranked Gannon University men's soccer team has kept a clean sheet—and ended all of those contests with a victory, including Saturday night's 1-0 result against Pitt-Johnstown. The Golden Knights' overall record improves to 9-1 (3-0 PSAC) while UPJ falls to 1-7-1 (0-4 PSAC.) Gannon earned the majority of possession in the game and out-shot UPJ 20-8 (11 to 5 in shots on goal) but could not find the back of the net from open play despite a bevy of chances.
Â
The lone goal of the game came in the 11
th minute, when a
Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000) shot ricocheted off of UPJ goalkeeper PJ Derksen (10 saves in the game) and the attempted followup from Gannon drew a foul in the box. The resulting penalty kick was well-taken by
Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School), who has now scored game-winning goals in back-to-back games (also scoring the only goal of the game last Wednesday versus Slippery Rock.) Knox (who now has scored 12 goals in his career) led the Knights with eight total shots (four on-target, both game-highs) while
Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) added five shots (two on goal.) The Golden Knights also held an advantage 8-2 in corner kicks.
Â
Gannon keeper
Maximiliano Rocco (Florence, S.C.) made five saves and is now tied for the PSAC lead in shutouts (four) with Seton Hill's Bobby White. Gannon has never lost to Pitt-Johnstown and is now 9-0 all-time versus the Mountain Cats.
Â
Despite the team just returning from a five-game away match stretch, they head back out for three more away contests, beginning with Seton Hill on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 2:00 p.m. After that, the team hosts four of the last five games of the season at home.
