RECAP
Â
ERIE, Pa. –  The No. 16-ranked Golden Knights welcome Seton Hill to McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday in a meeting of the top two teams in the PSAC West. Gannon (5-0-2 in PSAC play, 12-1-2 overall) is in first place in the West with 17 total points while Seton Hill (5-2 PSAC, 8-6-1 overall) trails by just two points. Lurking behind those two is Mercyhurst with 14 points. With three regular season matches remaining, the race for the PSAC West title is wide open.
Â
There was plenty of drama in the first meeting between the two teams, as the 1-1 score after regulation forced overtime and Seton Hill missed a chance to capitalize on a penalty kick with just 16 seconds left in the first OT. Freshman
Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) scored his first collegiate goal at the start of the second overtime to claim victory on the road.
Â
The Knights enter Saturday's matchup after another two overtimes and a 3-3 draw at Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday. Gannon sports a 10-game unbeaten streak and has not lost since Sept. 18. Seton Hill has had an interesting last three matches: a 7-0 loss to Notre Dame College in non-conference play, a 1-0 double overtime win versus Slippery Rock, and then another shutout loss by Mercyhurst 3-0 on Wednesday.
Â
Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) has found his goalscoring form for the Knights, scoring in five of the team's last seven matches, including the first meeting against the Griffins.
Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) has scored three goals in the last three matches and leads the entire PSAC in shots (67) and shots per game (4.47.) Ball distributors
Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) (seven assists) and senior
Bek Nurlanbek (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Loughborough College) (six) are ranked in the top 10 in the conference in that category. Del Castillo (nine goals, tied for third-highest in the PSAC) and
Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) (10 goals, ranked second) trail Mercyhurst's Sidney Warden (14 goals) for the conference lead.
The Griffins have a balanced offensive attack. Elias Vangen leads the squad with four goals, while a trio of other players (Archie Lock, Fletcher Amos, and Anthony Panko) have each put home three. Lock has also assisted on four goals, and 12 different Griffins have scored at least one goal in 2021. In comparison, only eight different Golden Knights have scored this fall. Seton Hill's keeper, senior Bobby White, has started 13 matches, made 49 saves, and carries a 0.95 goals-against-average into Saturday's contest.
Â
After the Knights battle the Griffins all that remains is the final week of the regular season—featuring two home games beginning with Mercyhurst on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 3:30 and concluding with Slippery Rock on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 3:30.
Gannon men's soccer also celebrates Senior Day on Saturday, with players from both the first team and developmental team honored for their time spent with the program.
