JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – A three-goals-in-three-minutes burst from the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats threatened No. 16-ranked Gannon's nine-match unbeaten streak, but a
Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) equalizer in the 77
th minute tied the game, 3-3, to salvage an eventual draw and push the unbeaten streak to 10 matches. The Golden Knights' record moves to 12-1-2 overall (5-0-2 PSAC West) while UPJ (1-10-2 overall, 0-6-1 PSAC West) remains in last place in the PSAC West. Gannon still sits atop those standings thanks to a Mercyhurst victory over Seton Hill elsewhere on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights hold a two-point advantage over Seton Hill and a three-point margin over the Lakers with three matches left to play in the regular season.
Â
Things started brightly for Gannon, with a pair of first half goals sending the team out to the 2-0 start.
Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) assisted on a
Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) goal in the 20
th minute to open the scoring. Knox has now scored a goal in five of the last seven matches and Aanberg leads the team with seven total assists this season. 10 minutes later, freshman
Peter Wagner (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) scored his first career collegiate goal with a strike assisted by
Bek Nurlanbek (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Loughborough College) to push the lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
Â
They say that 2-0 is the most dangerous scoreline in soccer, though, and UPJ proved why beginning in the 58
th minute. A penalty kick goal from Chase Kuhn put them on the board, and the Mountain Cats rode that momentum to add a Josh Sollars goal in the 59
th minute and an Andrew Jeffrey goal in the 61
st minute to speed out to a 3-2 lead. Nurlanbek assisted on Del Castillo's equalizer in the 77
th minute to make it 3-3 but despite huge advantages for Gannon in shots (32 to UPJ's six), shots on goal (14-4), and corner kicks (13-1), the Knights could not find a game-winning fourth goal. Nurlanbek has six assists this season while Del Castillo has notched nine goals—both are the second-highest totals on the team.
Â
Only three home matches remain in the regular season for Gannon, beginning with Seton Hill this Saturday, Oct. 30 at 6:00 p.m. in a matchup of the top two teams in the PSAC West.
