No. 16 Gannon Maintains PSAC West Lead with 1-0 Win over Seton Hill on Senior Night

ERIE, Pa. -- The 16th-ranked Gannon men's soccer team maintained its lead in the PSAC West on Saturday night with a wet and hard-earned 1-0 win over Seton Hill at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights, who have clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament, improved to 13-1-2 overall and 6-0-2 in conference action with their second win over the Griffins. Seton Hill is now 8-7-1 and 5-3-0 in the league.

Gannon previously captured a 2-1 win in two overtimes at Seton Hill on October 13. The Golden Knights remained ahead of local rival Mercyhurst, who defeated Slippery Rock today to improve to 5-1-2. The two teams will square off on Wednesday, November 3 at Gannon. Gannon has two remaining regular season contests. The Golden Knights now have an 11-match unbeaten streak, last losing on Sept. 18.

The triumph came on Gannon's Senior Night, with six student-athletes honored before the match. They included Bek Nurlanbek (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Loughborough College), Max Rocco, Lucas Oliveira, Paul Gonzalez (Guadalajara, Mexico/American School Foundation of Guadalajara), David Eitner (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown), and Julian Ramirez (Bogota, Colombia) Barrera. Nurlanbek and Rocco would play key roles in the victory.

After both teams had several solid scoring opportunities, Gannon scored the lone goal of the night at the 31:19 mark on a beautiful goal off a corner kick. Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) headed in Nurlanbek's corner kick for his tenth goal of the season. His header from the right side of the net went flying past the arms of Seton Hill goalkeeper Bobby White into the right corner of the net. Del Castillo now has a team-leading 23 points and is tied for the team lead in goals, while Nurlanbek took the team lead with seven assists.

Gannon had an excellent opportunity to improve on the lead with less than two minutes left in the half. A Griffins' defender held Del Castillo in the box for a penalty kick. Del Castillo attempted the penalty kick, but his low blast to the right was blocked by White.

The Golden Knights controlled the action during much of the second half, and had several strong opportunities in the final ten minutes. Most noteworthy, Del Castillo had a shot from 25 yards out deflected by White. Off the ensuing corner kick, a header failed, and Tinashe Katsande's (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) bicycle kick also did not produce a goal.

Seton Hill followed with it's best opportunity of the night. In the 86th minute, a yellow card on Gannon led to a free kick by Elias Vangen. His strong kick from 25 yards out was punched away by Rocco, who then got tangled with a Seton Hill player. A Griffin corralling the ball to the right of the goal. His shot hit a Gannon defender in front of the net, and the Golden Knight finally gained control.

Rocco registered his sixth shutout in goal, being credited with two saves. The graduate student, a transfer from Francis Marion, is tied for sixth in a season in shutouts. White had four saves for Seton Hill. Gannon ended the night with a 13-6 advantage in shots, including 5-2 in shots on goal.
