Men's Harriers Look for Strong Showing at PSAC Championships

ERIE, Pa. – For the second time this year, the Gannon University men's cross country team will compete in the PSAC Cross Country Championships. The 2020-21 PSAC Championships took place on March 20 at Lock Haven. Now seven months later head coach John Carrig will take his cross country teams to the 2021 PSAC Cross Country Championships on Friday, October 22 at Kutztown University's The Farm Course. The men's race will get underway at 11 a.m. and cover 8K.

Gannon comes off its best team finish ever at the 2020-21 PSAC Championships, coming in fifth out of 12 teams. The Golden Knights had two All-PSAC runners for the second straight year. Carrig is hoping for a similar strong showing this year, while also hoping to have a full squad. The veteran coach has had to battle numerous injuries and ailments during the course of the year, but looks forward to seeing his team compete on Friday.

"I'm excited to see what we do this year, particularly after performing as well as we did earlier in the year," related Carrig. "We are close to full strength. Not 100% but close. We had some good workouts the past week and hopefully the sickness is behind us. The cooler weather will help but we will have to run our best and have a little luck on our side. The PSAC is a very competitive race and this year is no different. I'm sure both of our teams will do their best."

Jacob Lehotsky (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) has been Gannon's lead runner this year. A graduate transfer from Penn State Behrend, he will be competing in the PSAC Championships for the first time, but is hardly a stranger to conference championships. He finished third at the AMCC Championships earlier this year, after placing sixth in 2019 and 10^th in 2018. Lehotsky was in the individual champions at the Fredonia State Invitational.

Caleb Mandel (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) and Ely Personius (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) are returning All-PSAC performers after finishing 25^th and 29^th, respectively, in the spring. Mandel moved up from a 60^th-place showing in 2019. Jon Uhl (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) was 43^rd a year ago and 49^th in 2019, and comes off a strong showing at the Slippery Rock Invitational. Alex Chelton (Oil City, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was 55^th in the spring.

Other top runners for the Golden Knights this year include Gavyn Hansotte (New Castle, Pa./New Castle), Jeremiah Vezza (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield), John Insinna (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence), and Matt Quieroiz.
